Ok ladies, I am going to apply to a few jobs and being that I am currently employed (this may sound bad)...but I do not want to waste my time (or theirs) by not listing my salary requirements. I know not to put it on the resume, but does anyone know how to word it properly in a cover letter? Some jobs seem to ask for it while others dont...but I would like to include it even in the jobs that do not require it.
TIA
would you give the range as a $5,000 range or a $10,000 range??

Re: nwr: salary requirements when applying for job
............My salary requirement, based on the job description and my research of jobs in this field, is in the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ range, not including benefits or supplements. My requirement is flexible and negotiable, depending on such factors as additional benefits, job requirements, and increased advancement opportunities.

i wouldn't put it in the cover letter when applying.. they usually ask when you fill out the paper work for your current salary and then will usually bump that up.
but it all depends on what kind of job it is i guess..

Re: nwr: salary requirements when applying for job
If you are going to state a salary amount on your cover letter (or even a job application) don't put down a range. I worked in recruitment for 15 years and when someone listed a range, let's say $50,000-60,000, I knew I could offer that person $50,000 and they should accept that amount because it was on their cover letter. Of course, the applicant may not be happy about $50,000 when they would ideally like $60,000. It's an easy trap to fall in. The lesson here is if you want $60,000, just come out and say it. This is your chance!

Re: nwr: salary requirements when applying for job
thanks! i used that in a response to my cover letter, then the HR director required that i write my salary requirement to even be considered!
i did put a range, but i said mid-to-high $$k.....
i guess it worked in my favor, because they offered me the very high end of th range...actually they exceeded the range a bit!

Re: nwr: salary requirements when applying for job
thanks for your help ladies! I know ideally i shouldnt include it in the cover letter unless it is asked for...but a friend of mine applied for a new job, got called for an interview, went and found out the pay was $10,000 less than what she makes now so it was a complete waste of time - and she had to take the day off of work for it. i dont want that to happen to me so i want to include a range.
