nwr: scary day

sry its long girls but i jsut needed to vent this and see if this ever happened to anyone eles..

yesterday i collapsed twice while i was at practice. we were just having a team meeting and i got up to help the girls set up and i got dizzy and my heart started racing. i went into the locker room and sat down. when i got back up i was so dizzy i fell down. then i got back up to make it back into the gym and i fell down in the doorway. it was such a horrible experience. i couldnt see right and my hearing was all muffled and my heart was racing. when i got to the doctor my pulse was 220 and my temp was 95 but i was sweating. the did ekgs, blood test and then sent me for a chest x-ray and nuclear scan to rule out blood clots. all that came back fine and now im wearing a halter pack to check my heart for 24 and have to have an eckocardiogram tomorrow. they said they might never know why it happened which scares me because then how am i supposed to know if it is gonna happen again.
thanks for letting me vent.

its happened to me alot...its vaso vago (or something like that, i cant spell it right)
Something just happens in your body and they cant explain it but you just pass out and then you are fine...sometimes its electrolyte imbalance, sudden temperature change, not eating enough, or even just as simple as doing something strenuous...
I wouldnt be worried if this is the first time its happened to you...One you go on for several days passing out everyday or everyother day, then i would be worried...This has happened to me more than once and I was fine...its just something your body does to maintain homeostasis...

I have this to...its called vaso vagal syncope. I pass our for no reason sometmes. Stress on the body, temp changes, not eating, being dehydrated...all of these things can cause it to happen. I went for heart tests, wore the halter pack and all and everything was fine. Now my FH and I laugh at it. Whenever you feel funny just sit down with your head between your knees so the blood is circulating all through your body. Drink LOTS of water and make sure to carry a snack with you at all times! Don't panic..you will be ok!

something similar happened to me but i didn't collapse i did loose hearing a bit for like 4 seconds, couldn't breath, got dizzy and loss vision for seconds too...i think it has to do with dehydration ....but hopefully they'll be able to tell you soon enough what caused this good luck!

Oh, that sounds very scary. I have two friends who have had this happen to. They tell me that they've learned to recognize the way their bodies feel right before something like this happens, so that they can sit down or stop what they are doing.

I hope all turns out ok for you.

Re: nwr: scary day

I have vasovagal also. It was most likely the beginning of vasovagal. Because you got to the floor fast enough, you didnt pass out. With vasovagal, there is nothing wrong with your heart or anything like that. Pretty much, your vagus nerve (part of your parasympathetic nervous system) doesnt regulate itself properly. Sometimes it goes crazy and this is when you pass out. It can be triggered by:
dehydration
exhaustion
needles or blood
pain
over-exhertion

There is no medical test that can prove that you have vasovagal. It is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that you get tested for all other things that could cause this type of thing (heart problems, siezure, and hormone problems - heart problems already excluded, for the possibility of low level siezure, see a neurologist for an EEG , for the possibility of hormonal issues, see an endocrinologist to get your hormone levels tested and adrenal function tested). But I would bet anything that you dont have any of these things and that you have vasovagal. Vasovagal usually shows during our age range and in females - doctors dont know why, but it has been proven.

Things you can do to treat vasovagal:
drink a lot of water
eat more salt (if you have low blood pressure too, which is pretty likely)
there are a few meds you can go on. the one with the least side effects (and the one i am on) is a minor steroid called fludrocortisone (i promise you that it wont make you blow up like other steroids and isnt dangerous like other steroids - ask your doctor, its in a different class.). it is essentially a salt pill.

Symptoms to look for:
If you experience any of these, sit down and drink WATER as soon as possible:
dizziness
tunnel vision/difficulty seeing/spots
difficulty hearing/usually fuzzy hearing
get very hot and sweaty...almost in a cold sweat
after a while, you just get a sense of when its coming.

I wish you luck. if you have any questions, feel free to fm me. Also, if you need suggestions of doctors to see, also dont be shy to contact me.

It sounds like vaso vagal syncope. People with this don't always pass out but sometimes come close. I usted to pass out alot. I try to eat regular meals and drinking gatorade can help too. When you feel that way sit on the ground with your head between your legs so the blood goes to your head.

There is a test called the Tilt Table test that can diagnose you. A poster above said there isn't a test but there is, I have personally seen it preformed.

yeah this is true...i was supposed to go but decided against it. I felt like as long as everything else came back negative i was fine with the diagnosis! if you are real worried i would schedule that!

you girls are awesome! thank you for all the info. im so glad that i can post things like this on here and everyone is so helpful!

Re: nwr: scary day

Actually nurse, the tilt table test can make anyone (even someone without vasovagal) pass out. All it tells you is that you have the capability to pass out, but doesnt tell you why. It is almost completely pointless in diagnosis.

PS, the information about the tilt table test comes from a world renowned cardiologist.

I guess every doctor differs because i have had a few doctors recommend this...they were also fabulous cardiologists.
