NWR: scary thing to wake up to. . . *WITH UPDATE*

Never had this happen before! Woke up to get ready for school and felt that my lip was swollen. Look in the mirror, and sure enough, my upper lip is about twice its normal size. I've never had that happen before! When I tried standing up for more than 10 seconds to brush my teeth, I felt so overcome with dizziness and nausea that I had to sit on the (covered) toilet with my head in my hands. Also have post nasal drip like you wouldn't believe.

Woke up FH, texted work friend to ask her to watch the kids I have coming to work with me before school (ain't no way I'm calling 23 homes like this), and now waiting for my doctor to open.

This IS a severe allergic reaction, right? I don't know what it could be to!!!!

Fingers crossed. . .at least this isn't happening a day before the wedding, right?

UPDATE: Doc thinks it was a bug bite allergy--thinks that the bug must have bit me near or around the mouth as I slept (EWW EWW EWW). Benedryl for 24 hours, if that doesn't work, then add a prescrip steroid to it. Can already see a difference in the swelling. Scary there, wasn't it?

Re: NWR: scary thing to wake up to. . .

Just tried calling my doctor, and her office doesn't open until 9 AM. Do I go to the ER right now instead of waiting? If I have to wait, then I DEFINITELY can't go to work.

Do you have any benadryl? If not I would go to the ER. Allergic reations can sometimes be bad.JMO

I would go to the hosp because if your having an allergic reaction it can get worse. You dont want GOD FORBID your tongue to start to swell because THAT will block your airways... =/ I would call out of work regardless if you go to ER or wait for doc just so you can give yourself a chance to recover.

We have FH's Rx for Allegra and Zyrtec, but those are more for seasonal allergies, I thought. Should I run around the corner to CVS and get some Benedryl now? My doctor doesn't open until 9 am.

Well, I'm not having trouble breathing, and my tongue doesn't look or feel swollen. . .so at least THAT'S good. Went to CVS to get Benedryl--the day manager took one look at me banging at the door at 6:59 am (when they open at 7 am) and directed me right to the Benedryl. Took two of those. . .hopefully some swelling will go down before I leave for the doc at 8:20 am.

And I took a look at my bad self in the mirror to see that my left eyelid is a bit swollen, too!

I knew I should have thought something was up when my legs and butt felt really itchy last night (TMI. . .sorry). . .

Did you eat something different (new) last night?

Re: NWR: scary thing to wake up to. . .

I went through the list of things I ate yesterday with FH at around 5:10 am. . .

Egg White and Cheese sandwich from DD--but I've never had problems with their egg white ANYTHING before, or anything egg related for that matter

Panera: 1/2 cup French onion soup and a turkey sandwich--but FH and I go there frequently, so I don't think this is it

P.F. Changs: one spring roll and about half of the ginger chicken and broccoli--again, things I have eaten before

Who the hell knows. . .I'm hoping the doctor will have some ideas!!!

Edit: . . .yeaaaaaaaaaaaah, I have to change my eating habits slightly, don't I?

I had that reaction one time when I was eating raw figs straight from the fruit. Apparently, the skin hitting your lips can cause an allergic attack, causing swelling and stinging.

Nothing you ate really reminds me of that, except maybe the ginger. Did you snack on some ginger as well?

I recommend against self-medicating, in case your doc wants to give you a cortisone shot or something.

Hope you get in there soon!!!

Re: NWR: scary thing to wake up to. . .

I didn't munch on raw ginger or anything like that--it was a part of the sauce. Hmm.

One of FH's colleagues thinks it might be a bug bite overnight of some sort. Either way, this is NOT cool.

The dude at CVS told me that if I had gone to the ER, they would have just given me Benedryl anyway, so I'm taking it just to start the process. Phew!

oh sounds like it could be a bite. . let us know if the benadryl kicks in. . it sounds scary but seems like a good sign that you are not having secondary symptoms. ..

you didn't eat mango did you? some people have a weird reaction to mango that makes your lips swell up just like that? IDK.

Please keep us updated!!! The body does some strange things sometimes. You may have developed an allergy over time (has happened to me!). I hope you are feeling better soon!

Being that it started as itchyness it might not have been something you ate. I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you to all of the girls that got me through this! I knew it was a minor bump in the road in the long run, but at the time, I was genuinely freaking out. We are the LIW 'pledge class of '09!!!'
