NWR: Scuba Diving

Do any of you girls have your certification? If so, can you recommend a place to take the lessons? FH & I were watching fool's gold last night and decided scuba might be a really fun and new thing to do while on our HM

FH just signed up at Danny's Dive Shop. I think it might be in MErrick. Google it.

FH got his certification through Long Island Scuba on Wellwood Ave in Lindenhurst. I think the website is longislandscuba.com

I was going to get certified too, but did the resort dive when we went to Hawaii in 2007 and decided I didn't really like it. The resort certification lets you go up to 35 feet down which was really enough for me

I got certified from a place that is no longer in business but the people are all over at the place on Wellwood.

I highly recommend D over their. DH did his certification with him and loved it.

ANy ques. let me know I have been diving for years and actually planned our HM around the diving. We dove the blue hole....140' down.

Oh and I rec against the resort cert. you can do a full cert at many resorts but you will waster 3-4 days of your HM in classes and certification dives.

Re: NWR: Scuba Diving

You can do a beginner dive at the the hotel with their lesson and you don't have to be certified. They will train you in the pool usually for free and then you might have to pay for an upgrade for the instructor to take you out right off the beach, Hotels in Mexico usually take you out on a boat, I am sure some other places do that as well. If you are staying at an all inclusive you might not have to pay the upgrade. FH and I are planning to do a beginner dive in Maui.

Underwater Scooters are becoming really popular and they have them in most islands. They are called BOB's (Breathing Observation Bubble). This might be a great alternative for you. It's almost like scuba diving. FH and I plan on doing this in Oahu.

The blue hole was insane!!!!! and the best experience of my life. I had never been deeper than 45'. and when they said 140' and almost sh*t my bathing suit. It was seriously being in another world. I say sharks circling below me. (the hole goes done to 400') the earth formations are crazy. It was beautiful.

I highly recommend getting certified and you can do it in a few weeks here. and then do the certification dives locally. DH did his dives in far rockaway. Then you can do a day of diving on the HM. You can go on the PADI website to find local dive shops......oh and sometimes the resort certification is more expensive....

Do you know what the average price to get certified is?

around here it is pretty much a set price. I got certified in 2001 so im sure it is more expensive.

Jamie you live near me (I think) so I rec the place on Wellwood just south of 109. I think its a couple hundred. and that covers the classes and cert dives. You have to buy mask fins and snorkel. And I think you have to rent the equip but just for the open dives....the pool work they let you use shop equipment.

It sounds pretty expensive to start up. Maybe it's best we try the hotel dive and then if we love it get certified when we get back. We probably don't have much time considering we leave in 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We did the resort dive in Maui. It was 2 hours in the pool and then they take you off the beach.

Jamie - did you find the info online about the BOBs in Oahu? I can't seem to find it and FH and I really want to do it when we're there.

Yep, that's the one. Thanks for finding it, I had misplaced the page myself. I am going to bookmark it now. FH really wants to do this too.

I just realized on that site it says you only get 20 mins under the water. I feel like that is so short. It says you are with them for 3 hours so I feel like that must be a lot of instruction. Do you think that it's worth it?
