NWR: Sinus Infection

FH has a sinus infection and is crying like a baby about it...does anyone recommend anything to take?
He went to the Dr and he got a nose spray...he said its not working and has a constant headache...the only thing that's getting rid of the headache right now is Excedrin...

Anyone have any remedies or anything??

Advil Cold and Sinus works for me.

However, it is only sold behind the counter now, you won't find it on the shelf.

That's the only thing that works for me.

Maybe he can try something PM, at least it will put him to sleep!

Take it from someone who has already had two sinus surgeries for chronic obstruction and infections. Nasonex and Levaquin. Need a prescription for both but it works within 2 days. In the meantime keep taking Excedrin or 3-4(max) Advil or Motrin.

Re: NWR: Sinus Infection

if it's a sinus infection he needs antibiotics, and even they can take a while to make it all go away (this is from the person who had an ongoing infection for a year and a half).

the thing that really worked for me though is one of those saline rinses. i recommend buying them in the store (the aisle with the sinus medicines - get the squeeze bottle one) as if you make it yourself the salt water can be to salty and burns (ow!). anyways, mix up the solution they give you in luke warm water and then have him squeeze it up one nostril and let it come out the other. when i had it really bad i did like 3 rinses every few hours and i swear by the end of the night i could breathe and wasn't in pain anymore. it doesn't make the infection go away (you need meds for that) but it relieves the pressure and clears out a lot of the infection so the meds can work better. it's a little gross, but when you've tried everything else, it's a lifesaver.

I get chronic sinus infections and the doctor usually prescribes an anitbiotic called Doxycycline. It usualy clears it up within a few days. Did they give him Nasonex or something? Those help but over a longer period of time for me. I feel for him though. Sinus infections make me cry like a baby too.

Re: NWR: Sinus Infection

i am the QUEEN of sinus infections!!! Here is what I do...

hang out in a steamy hot shower for as long as i can....this opens your sinuses and helps them to drain

then i take advil cold and sinus

then i use the menthylated breathe right strips

then i use a warm compress on my head

I keep all the windows shut to decrease my allergies

and then....i usually fall asleep for a while :)

It really helps. Mine is so bad bc of my septum...ive been putting of my surgery bc of the wedding

if it is definitely a sinus infection, he probably needs an antibiotic to clear the infection

Re: NWR: Sinus Infection

I get sinus pain/headaches a lot myself. I usally do this:

take lots of Extra Strength Tylenol

take anything with psuedophedrine (preferrably) or Phenylephrine. Psuedophedrine happens to work better for me. Sudafed or generic, I don't see a difference.

Alternate moist,hot/warm compress & cold compress: They have these in the drug store - you stick them in the microwave and they emit moist heat, unlike a heating pad.

I generally do more warm compresses than cold. Sometimes one feels better than the other.

I've been on lots of sprays too, they take a while to start working. So I use them in addition to the other stuff.
