NWR Spinoff Kinda to the new puppy post, girls with dogs

I have been BEGGING FH for a puppy for years, he says its too difficult with our working situations. We are moving next month to a place 10 minutes from work, and we both work 830-530, but I am allowed to go home during lunch. I always had a dog growing up and now I am sad that I dont have one anymore. Do any of you work full time and have a dog?? FH really doesn't think its a good idea, but I was thinking I could make it work since I will live so close to work.

yeah we have an english bull dog, Hali she is 5 yrs old. (pictures in my album) I am actually getting FH a baby bully as one of his wedding presents. Tell Fh that this going to be your first wifey demand and you are putting your foot down!!!

yeah I know, that won't work on my FH either. It's totally do able, don't give up trying to convince him!!!!

i think you can totally do it. i work 1 hour from home and we were able to raise a puppy. now my pug's older, he doesnt mind staying home all day lounging (yes, he told me so). You also might want to research the breeds (even if you are adopting) to get an idea of what breed needs a lot of exercise. pugs are often called lap dogs, and they are pretty lazy. he definitely needs exercise, but not as much as some other more excitable breeds.

i have also been begging FH for a puppy. ignoring the fact that our apartment is too small i totally understand why its a bad idea. yes dogs are wonderful & FH & I plan on getting one in the future but they are a lot of work. & when they get sick they are super expensive.

Please no one take anything that i say to heart, i just want to voice my opinion on the situation.

my sister has a 3 year old beagle, a couple of weeks ago my parents & my sister went to AC for a couple of days. that's when i realized that FH & I have no time for a dog. i had to wake up early to take her for a walk & then leave her in the backyard all day. poor thing got stuck in the rain for the 8 hours that i was at work. then when i got home from work i would have to take her for a walk & then FH had to play with her for an hour before she would even be ready to think about going to sleep. she was depressed the entire time because my sister wasn't home & she had a hard time sleeping because no one else was in the house with her. one night she barked for an hour straight because she was lonely. she couldn't stay with us because we have a cat & they don't get a long.

FH & I have a cat & when we go away we leave a clean litter box, a window open & a friend just stops in once a day to feed her. she doesn't need to be walked or exercised. easy enough right? nope. she is 13 years old & we now have to give her IV under her skin 3 times a week, prescription food & she has to go to the vet twice a month. it has cost us more in doctor bills for the cat then for ourselves.

For that same reason we adopted a 2 year old mutt from the North Shore Animal League because he was already trained and we can leave him for long periods of time.

I have a 6 month old Jackabee (Jack Russell/Beagle) and at first it was a tough transition for us. I wouldn't give her up for anything in the world but it does limit what we do... Whenever we go away for the weekends we bring her and all of her toys, bed, food, etc... It's like having a kid. But I LOVE her to pieces- she's my little girl <33

**By the way she is home for about 6-7 hours a day by herself

My friend who lives alone just got a puppyy and works 7:30-3:30 ( she is a teacher) and it worked out well for her . As long as you can go home fo rlunch to get it out it will be fine, Fh has adog that will be with us but right now he his still at home and his brother works on wekkends so she is never alone but when get married she will be, You can make it work it will b e stressful but its practice for children lol

We have a mini beagle who I take to work with me everyday. If you def could go home from work to check during the day I think that should work.

Go for it. I cant imagine life without her

If you go home for lunch and you crate train them there is no reason why you cant do it...

FH gets home early some days... like 4ish, but he leaves the house before 6... so he walks her before he leaves and when he gets home ... i dont get home till 6:15 ish and i will walk her a few times before bed...

Something to keep in mind though... make sure you have a dog sitter for the wedding and HM...

I have no clue what i'm gonna do about that!

we actually bring our puppy to doggy day care a few days a week and the other days FH goes home on lunch to take her out! We kinda lucked out cuz when we first got her, FH was working from home a lot and was able to be with her... but since then he's taken a new job and can't get back to her. Puppy's are a lot of work and those days we leave her home alone, she doesnt sleep so well at night (when we take her to daycare she mostly sleeps the whole night through). She is 7 months and i wouldnt change having her for the world - but a LOT more work then i ever expected!!!! Good luck! :)

I work full time and FH travels Monday through Friday for work and we have a dog. The hardest part is house breaking them but if you crate train them it is SO easy. We took Darwin home at 10 weeks and about a month after that he hardly had any accidents. I would let him out in the morning as soon as we got up, again right before I left. My mom would come over and let him out around 12 and stay with him for a little while and then when I got home I would scoop him up and bring him right outside. The thing I find amazing is that they really for the most part will not 'go' in their crate unless they are sick or not feeling well.

It is totally doable and if you can make it home during lunch to help establish a routine that will help even more. Before you know it he'll be house broken.

My sister's dauchshund on the other hand was a little tougher. So just do your research on the type of dog. That makes a difference too.

People get all self righteous, OH I would NEVER leave a dog home all day by himself... You know what dogs do all day whether you are home or not? They sleep. I could send a parade through the living room and Darwin won't flinch.

I would also recommend getting a puppy in the spring/summer. A puppy requires a lot of walks and it's much easier to do it when it's nicer out than when it is raining, snowing or cold.

wow, its really nice to see a lot of you girls working full time and making it work. Maybe if I show this to FH will consider it. I think once we get one he would probably come around.

I think you can definetily do it... but I would say maybe take off like a Thursday and Friday or a Monday and Tuesday so you can have the weekend plus those 2 dogs to get the dog used to everything.

ok- so the same situation arose with my fiance as well.. and after begging him for like 4 years he finally gave in- we had gotten a 5 week old rottie- we crate trained her until she turned 1 and now we leave her all day without coming home

my advise is - if you travel alot= or go out alot- things change alot when you get a pup= since u gotta be home for them

but its totally worth it=
I love my roxy :)

good luck

also a good idea is to contact a pet sitter....there are tons of places that will come in and take your dog for a walk. there is a woman by me who takes them to the dog park for hours! its great!
