One of the best districts is 26 in Queens. It's virtually impossible to get in there though. It's such a safe area and the schools always do very well with the reading/math citywide tests. Basically someone has to die for there to be an opening there.

My boss's kids go to PS 9 on the Upper West Side. They had to go through interviews to get in and they have accelerated and honors programs.

My little sister is in kindergarten at PS 9 and it's a tough school. Even with the regular classes (not advanced) they have kids doing so much homework and learning to read and write at what I think is a young age (I didn't learn to read until first grade). It''s an awesome school with lots of parents involvement.

Yep, my boss is very involved! I had to check my checkbook to remember what school it was (I have bought magazines and wrapping paper). She tells us about some of their projects/homework and I'm shocked how much more intense it is than when I was young.

This is where I grew up! I guess that's why I turned out so well...

I was going to say the same thing...

Re: NWR: spinoff to best school districts, anybody know which are best in NYC

Also, district 26 in Queens
District 2 in Manhattan
Region 8 in Brooklyn has some nice schools
District 75 (special ed.) is all over the city, so some good options there
District 76 (I think)...that's Staten Island

Basically, the Board of Ed. is screwed up on a good day. There are some wonderful schools all over the city, but you really have to do your research. but on the other hand, so many of those kids in the underperforming schools need good teachers. many of those schools stay bad schools because good teachers won't go there. My experience with the Board of Ed. job fairs is if they have to fill a vacancy and they are filling it through a job fair, it means they are a hard to staff school which could mean a lot of things: bad area, tough kids, crappy administration, not commutable, etc. etc. Most schools are anxious to hire at job fairs and they want you to sign school unseen. Do your research... you will find a school that meets your needs.

FM if you need more info.

Thanks for all of the replies. I teach English and prefer Middle School level but would teach High School in the right school.

The career fair was quite disappointing, back to subbing :(
