so yesterday while crossing the boulevard of death (aka QB) to get coffee at DD i BADLY sprained my ankle. I went to a meeting went to work, iced it. got home last night, made dinner for fh, iced it, elevated and wrapped it.
this morning i woke up and it was worse - couldn't put any weight on it at all. so now i'm working from home (bed, actually) and trying to figure out how to deal with it. if it's just a sprain there is nothing the doc can do right? but i've had sprained ankles before and they were never this bad...
any suggestions/remedies?? i guess i'm not going skiing this weekend!!
oh and i can't really go to the doc b/c i can't walk and i don't even have a doc in queens

Re: nwr: sprained ankle
It might be worth getting an x-ray. I had the same thing happen (my ankle swelled to the size of a tennis ball), and it ended up being a hairline fracture, which required an aircast for a couple of weeks. Once the cast was one, it felt much better.

oh how horrible I used to hate crossing that- I think the best thing to do is exactly what u are doing keep it elevated- hope you have a speedy recovery

FH's brother sprained his ankle badly and has been in a cast for the past month.
You should go to the doc to see what the severity is.

ugh i was afraid of that. that's exactly how big it is/was yesterday. can i buy an aircast myself? [can you tell i don't want to go to the doc?]
i know this is dumb but where can i get an x-ray? maybe like a first med or something?

Re: nwr: sprained ankle
if you can go to a walk in center. my regular doc has to send me out for x-rays, but walk in centers will do it right then and there.

i work in physical therapy and we see ankle sprains/strains all the time. i'd go to the doc and have an x-ray and PT if they feel appropriate. hope you feel better

OH NO i am soooo sorry QB is the worst though.
definitely go to a doctor. And you're lucky bc in forest hills it is FILLED with doctors...all those buildings all have a doctor office in it, its insane...if you look up queens doctors about 80% are in forest hills. Ask if someone can help you get there.
Hope you feel better soon

Re: nwr: sprained ankle
thanks girls! i just finished some work so i'm going to try to walk around on it and see how it is... i really want to call my parents and see if they can take me somewhere but my dad is just getting over pneumonia so i don't want him to go out
the nearest walk in place is i think glendale. which with a car is 7 minutes, without who knows. so i'm going to wait until later b/c i need to be around for work, and maybe my sister or mom could take me.
i'm also STARVING but feel like a fat lump b/c i haven't moved all day! this stinks!!
thanks for all the good wishes though

seriously. they don't call it the boulevard of death. some old lady was crossing the street and saw me fall and i swear she SMILED like 'ha ha, at least it's not me'. not that i really blame her.

Re: nwr: sprained ankle
i agree that you do need to get an x-ray.
I've sprained my ankles 6 times per ankle & i'm not kidding or stretching the truth.
Ice it every 30 minutes...i like to use frozen onions or peas - they tend to spread out nicely and re-freeze easily.
Keep it ELEVATED - VERY important!!!!
Take aleve for the swelling....it has an anti-inflamatory in it.

Re: nwr: sprained ankle
Feel better!!!! its ok to wait till later when someone else can take you but I DEF. recommend going to a doctor!!! once you sprain an ankle it can take a while to heal and they are easy to re-sprain for a while... a few years ago I sprained my ankle really REALLY bad in early September and re-sprained it in January just by walking wrong. My point is take care of it now so that it wont bother you later!!!!!

yea that's fine...just get yourself an ace bandage and an air cast and keep it up and in sneakers....u might want to consider getting urself some crutches too for a bit, just until it heals some more and u can put more pressure on it. Just to be safe though if its turning colors go get an xray- take it from someone who's broken aLOT of things in her life (I played rugby in college and I'm klutzy anyway) FEEL BETTER!
