nwr: Syosset & Plainview

As some of you now Fi and I are condo/house hunting. We've been looking at different areas and this past weekend we took a trip out to Syosset. It's a great line for the LIRR (since we both work in the city) and it seems like a nice area. Then the real estate agent told us about Plainiview. Does anyone have any feedback about either town? We are both from Queens so this is new to us.

My sister has owned in Syosset for 10 years. It's a great neighborhood - one of the best school districts on Long Island. Good train line. However, it's expensive.....very expensive.

I am from Syosset!! I love it there and the schools are very good. It has a large Jewish population. I think real estate is pretty expensive there and property taxes are pretty high. Plainview is nice too, but I think lower in costs. HTH a little bit!!!

Thanks girls!
I know prices are crazy, esp. the taxes but FI wants North Shore Nassau Doesn't matter much to me. Price wise they both seem to be in the same price area. School taxes are between $11-16 in both areas. I want to make sure they are good/safe areas. I just wanted to ask around. Sometimes you can't always go by what the real estate agent says.

It is definitely a great area to be and raise children. I vote Syosset!

I grew up in Plainview, good schools, and nice area, but there is no LIRR station there, we always used to use the one in Hicksville

Yes the real estate agent told us this. But it's close to either Hicksville or Syosset so it's okay.

I live in Queens and work out there - they are both great places! Syosset is a great school! I don't know much about Plainview as far as the school... I know that it is cheaper and it is still a really great area!

Either way you go - you will be in a really nice neighborhood

I grew up in Plainview/Old Bethpage and my sister teaches in Syosset.

Syosset schools are definitely a better choice (not by much) but they have a great philosphy in the district and their budget never gets turned down because the community believes in educating their children.

As far a prices, they equal out. One has high house prices and lower taxes, the other has higher taxes and lower houses. I forget which is which but they equal out.

Hicksville is a much better line than Syosset. They have express trains running all the time. Syosset use to be a diesel line and ran much slower.

I would personally choose Syosset over Plainview, it is actually much more diverse (economically). Plainview has got so much snobbier over the years I hate to even go to the shopping centers there (many of my HS friends and moved back and feel the same way)

Have you also considered Woodbury (it's the Syosset school district)?

FH grew up in Plainview. It is a good school and the area is really nice. We decided that when it is time to get out of our apartment we will probably look there. A lot of his friends from HS have bought houses there.
