NWR: Target/Wal Mart vs. Grocery

Is it cheaper typically to buy cleaning supplies and paper goods and toiletries at a grocery store, or a mass merchandiser like Target or Wal Mart?

I'm planning to hit up Target after work for my Swiffer and White Strips since I know they have the lowest prices for the white strips at least that I could find, and I also need some pjs so kills two birds with one stone, but barring any sales or specials, are the regular prices for like windex and Dow and stuff higher?

I find that for many things it's better to buy in bulk at BJ's or Costco. But, to answer your question Walmart and Target are cheaper than grocery stores unless the grocery store has a really great sale!

Awesome, that's what I thought. We don't have a membership for the wholesale places, yet at least, so I guess I'll just go to Target as planned.

Target or Walmart are def cheaper than a grocery store... esp Stop and Shop.

Even cheaper than Target or Walmart is Family Dollar!!!! Family Dollar is by far the BEST BET!!! I have one a few blocks from me and it's GREAT!!!!!

Bulk stores are awesome too... but you are buying in bulk and so the total price is still very high!! You can easily drop like 200 dollars and not even have a lot of differnt items!!! I'd be careful there. I find bulk stores are best for large families or to stock up... not necessarily to lower your bill. Your bill will be cheapest at Family Dollar, then at a Target or Walmart... then the grocery store.

KMart and ACE hardware also have good prices on cleaning supplies - especially when they are doing their 'dollar days' promotions.

Home Depot and Lowes also have good prices on cleaning supplies.

Supermarkets are expensive for that kind of stuff. Also, at Costco, you have to know the prices of things because sometimes it actually works out to be more expensive buying there.

Don't overbuy now - it's hard to judge exactly how many clorox wipes you're going to go through at first.

ITA with Kerri. I just realized that I wasn't speaking from a monthly budget place. I go to BJ's and Costco about once every month and I buy two of everything we use and then I don't have to worry about it for a long time. It's convenient because I don't have to run to the store all the time for little things. But then again, I always stock up on anything we use regularly when it's on sale (except perishable goods) so we don't have a food budget or anything. Some months I spend $400 in groceries and then the next month it's like $40 because we didn't need much.

Ive found things to be anywhere from $.50 to $2.00 cheaper at Walmart - depending on the item. But we dont have a walmart around the corner from us - so I try to do a monhtly shopping there so I make it gas cost effective.

I find Walmart is the cheapest place to buy that stuff unless you are like me.. I go into Walmart to buy dog food
and walkout spending a hundred bucks.

Me too! THey definitely have the best prices but I always buy more than I was supposed to when I go there. Totally off subject but they also have the best prices on toys. I have a ton of nieces and nephews so I have to really plan out Christmas shopping and search for the best prices. Without fail Walmart always wins!
