Just wondering if anyone's school district is hiring? I'm being excessed and it seems everyone district out there is cutting positions rather than hiring.
I'm certified in Social Studies (5-12) AND Students with Disabilities Social Studies (7-12)
There has to be a school out there!!

Hey, I don't know your situation..but I'm assuming your being excessed because your untenure. If that's the case then only new schools would be hiring right now.

I dont know where you are looking for. Im in Brooklyn and I feel like they are always hiring people. My school is called Prospect Campus and there are 4 schools in the building so try each principal i guess.

I know the NYCBOE has a hiring freeze right now; which means they are not hiring anyone that is not already within the NYCBOE. I am sorry about your situation!! I will keep my ears/eyes open for you but I am in Elementary Education so I am not sure I will be any help.

You can be excessed when you're tenured also if enrollment is down, or they do away with certain positions. Not sure what you mean by new schools? If someone retires in any school, then there is an opening unless they opt not to fill that position due to a decline in enrollment.
To Summer Bride: Try Copiague, I heard they were hiring SS in the HS a little while back. I'm sorry but I don't know if they filled that position or not. In the MS (where I work) there is nothing open right now Good luck

I'm not speaking for LI schools..in city schools bloomberg is having a hiring freeze for newer teachers, and untenured teachers are venurable to excessing. Teachers that have their tenure can get excessed too, but it's less likely. schools would try to cut other things from their buget before they cut their tenured teachers. If teachers are tenured and excessed they would be placed in another school. Newbies can only apply to newly opened schools that do not have a staff yet. No city schools are hiring because many older teachers are not retiring due to monies lost in their TDA/Retirement, therefore there isn't room for newer teachers. Therefore, the union is trying to come up with teacher incentives to retire.

Thanks for the responses. I work in a public school on L.I right now. They aren't excessing new teachers- just teachers with the least seniority. In fact, a few of the teachers being excessed have tenure.
