Well unfortunately we are faced w/ the unpleasant knowledge that we are going back to school
Anyhow, I have been teaching for 7 yrs and Im tired of my same old 'opening day' routine. I was wondering if anyone had any fun and cute get-to-know-you activities.
Just some background, I teach 6th grade SS and I teach 40 min periods so it cant be anything long.
THANKS

Re: NWR: Teachers (RP from 06)
I'M NOT READY YET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry had to get that out....
i like doing the person scavenger hunt game but with updated things. (i.e. find a person that likes listening to eminem, find a person that likes to play ___ play station2 game, etc.) but i keep in the basics like ...a middle child, blue eyes, a musician...)
it's cheesy but we all have fun.

I do the scavenger hunt too. The kids like it. Some people don't like this idea but I am a nutritionist and I believe everything is ok in moderation...I have a huge bag of candy and tell each kid they can take up to 5 pieces. Most take five b/c its candy and they don't know what they are going to have to do. For every piece of candy they have in front of them they have to say something about themselves. It's fun and it takes a while depending on how big your class is! Good luck!

I've also seen this done with pennies, although I'm sure the candy works better with 6th graders.
You might also try 2 Truths and a Lie. Ask the students to partner up and tell three things (two true, one untrue) that they did over the summer. Then they must figure out which of their partner's statements is a lie. Afterward, partners can share with the class if there's time.

Re: NWR: Teachers (RP from 06)
I HAVE ONE!!
All you need is a dark sheet, blanket or parachute - something you just cant see through. You split the class up into 2 and they sit on the floor cross legged facing each other.
They pick one person in each group to sit face to face with the blanket held up in between them... You dont want one group to see the another. You make sure there are two people sitting right up close to the blanket facing each other (blanket between them) then you say 1- 2- 3 and on 3 drop the blanket! The first to say the other persons first name (can do many different things) Gets a point.
Helps the kids get to know each others names. Some will know them, some wont. I play it on day 1 and the last day. By the end of the year they are doing so weel we do last names. YOu can do this after a bried intruduction of everyone so they have a better chance...

Re: NWR: Teachers (RP from 06)
I have been in my classroom for a couple of weeks setting things up...I have first grade dual language.
Something for 6th grade that I saw was a cute idea...get a peice of paper and split it into boxed sections. On each section write something like find someone who has a first intitial as me. Find someone who likes __(insert singers name). Find someone who was born in the same town or country. Make up as many as you like...Point is for the students to walk around and get to know their classmates make it like a tic tac toe board and see who can get the first one of rows going up or down. Seemed fun! Good Luck and have a great year!
