alright, the internet has been no help and neither has NYS dept of ed, so i'm asking you girls:
ok, so has anyone here gotten certified by initial certification? (BA, then take your ed classes and teach while getting your MA) i just finished up my BA and am looking into taking my ed classes so i can get my initial certification, but i don't know what to take! i applied for a NYS evaluation, but it says i can take 6-8 months. my fault for not doing it earlier, but i was hoping to start ASAP, not in 6 months!
i haven't taken any ed classes yet, just my liberal arts (english, science, history) and my major classes (art). i've also taken 2 psychology classes (abnormal and gender and sex) but i don't think they'll count to anything. do you girls know any basics that i'll DEF. need that i can start taking while i'm waiting on my evaluation (does it really take 6 months?). THANKS SO MUCH!!

Re: NWR: teaching?
yeah, I was going to do it, but decided at the last minute to move to Austin with FH, and applied to their program instead. I got it, but then at the last minute they realized I was missing a math course so I lost it. =0\ now I'm kinda scrambling to see if I can get certified by myself and start teaching next year. I'm still debating between doing it this way, or applying to NYTF next year... I just don't know where we're gonna be (though i WANT to be in NY) and a 2 yr commitment away from FH - esp after the wedding - isn't the nicest option. =0( and I've decided since applying to the Austin one that I want a NYS license b/c it's accepted in a whole lot more places.
gah! i'm just so frusterated! i have no clue where to look or what to do and i want to get this done ASAP. ugh...

Re: NWR: teaching?
I hate to discourage anyone from entering the teaching profession, but NYTF is just not what is appears to be. I am a fellow, and luckily I was part of the last cohort that received FULL TUITION paid for Grad School. This is no longer the case. Now you receive a stipend to go to one of the participating Grad Schools...i think City College is one. Fordham, St. Johns no longer participates. In addition you will have to do your time in tough, and I stress tough schools-- hard to staff schools that have low retention rates in some of the toughest areas in the 5 boroughs, but most will be in Bronx, Brooklyn, and Uptown Manhattan. I just left the school where I was along with most of the Teaching Fellows that were there and Teach for America Teachers. Teaching is rewarding, and I love it...but I strongly suggest looking into other programs.

Re: NWR: teaching?
If you call Nassau or Suffolk BOCES and ask for the certification office, they have some great people there who can help direct you to what you need for certification.
My daughter received her cert. out of state and they were so helpful in wading through the confusion for NYS cert.!
