NWR: Teaching (BEYOND upset right now)

NWR: Teaching (BEYOND upset right now)

I taught second grade for a year after I graduated college, then I went to Law School and graduated...then went back to teaching. When I decided I wanted to return to teaching, I called the State to find out if my law degree met the requirement for a Master's and was told NO it was not related and couldn't count.

So I enroll in the Master's in Literacy program at Dowling...just finished in January..and I get an email TODAY telling me that someone was reviewing my application for an initial certificate (my provisional expired in Aug. before I could finish the Master's) AND THAT MY LAW DEGREE MET THE MASTER'S REQUIREMENT!!

I am so upset right now..I just wasted 3 years of time and close to $30,000 in a Master's that got me NOWHERE! I feel like I just ran in place for three years...I busted my a$$ to finish that Master's..and b/c of new requirements for an Initial Cert. I had to take the multi-subject CST, a bunch of workshops a CLEP exam to fullfill a Math requirement and so much more!!

I'm sorry for venting..I just can't believe this happened to me! I am SO mad at the State right now. They treat people horrible, you can never get through on the phone (you get hung up on after waiting 20 minutes) you get automated responses via email that they are too overwhelmed!! It is SO unfair that they are allowed to do this do people...I could have been in a completely different place right now if they gave me the correct info. the first time!!

Well, look on the bright side. Not only are you INSANELY well educated now, but you will probably command a higher salary due to all of your credits!

i am so sorry, it does seem like such a waste but you must be even more ahead of the game now than you would have been

so sorry, but at least you have a lot of schooling and experience. Hopefully it will be easy to sell yourself with your background

ugh sorry to hear that, yeah I thought in NY you could get a masters or another degree in anything (a friend wants to do MBA).....that is annoying, hope there was something good out of it, must have been hard but education is usually worth it.

PS - a masters degree in literacy is invaluable! I wouldn't regret getting it at all, especially since the teaching market is so competitive in this area!

Go New York State! WOO HOO! You have dropped the ball once again.

Education is NEVER a waste. You have grown as a person and gained more than you know. Yes you may be in a different place if...But so would we all, you know?

I know it suucks but there is a HUGE positive that outweighs the negative here.

I'm so sorry that you ended up getting a second degree that you didn't really need. I hope that the universe sends you oodles of money for the mistake the State of New York made.

I understand your frustrations! I was told I didnt meet requirments to get into a program and had to wait an extra year to get in a take an extra year of classes because a stupid advisor messed up. turns out i met requirements all along. i didnt lose as much $$ or time as you did but at least you got a great degree out of it so its NOT for nothing!. Keep your head up and keep on truckin'!

I'm sorry..that does suck, but I will agree with what others have said...your Master's in literacy will help you a LOT..both when you are teaching and also in finding a job in the first place. I work in a school but am not a regular classroom teacher..and I wish I had taken more education credits...experience/education for teachers is ALWAYS a huge plus
