Does anyone know any insider tips on finding out how to get into the LI Public School system or even private schools?
M boyfriend is moving back to NYC and we are so excited but he has to find a job. He's an English teacher (Elementary and HS level) 3 years exp. and is fully certified.
Help.. We need to save : getting married next summer :)

Re: NWR: Teaching Positions..
Long Island is all about who you know unless you want to get in as a sub or something. You can most def. go into New York City and the salaries there are comparable to LI.
If you're interested check out the website www.teachnyc.com

Re: NWR: Teaching Positions..
Honestly? There are 10 (or more) applicants for every single position - and I mean 10 qualified applicants. It's a TOUGH market right now - they're absolutely right up above that it's all about knowing somebody. If you don't... I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's tough. And it's actually not necessarily an advantage to have 3 years of experience, because more experience = higher salary, which makes you less desirable. 3 years might not be so bad... but newbies come cheap, and they're everywhere.
If I were him, I'd apply for ANYTHING I saw - subs, TA's, leave replacements - anything. You've got to get your foot in the door any way you can, especially if you don't want to work in the more desperate areas.

I've been an English teacher in Brooklyn for 7 years. FM me if you have any questions. I don't think it is that hard to find a job in NYC. There are so many small schools opening and turnover is so high. My department just hired THREE new teacers this month! I know a couple of people are leaving this June.

This is what really pisses me off....When I graduated it was oh not enough experience...Now I have 2 years under my belt and another certification half way done and they are hiring people with no experience and only a Bachelors...No offense to anyone but I think you need to pay dues and then get a LI job...JMO

At the same time many districts won't give you $$ credit for past experience anyways unless it was in the district

Re: NWR: Teaching Positions..
There were hundreds up for my job and Im pretty sure I got it because I subbed there, every single day that they asked! They loved me!
Find a district where an English teacher is retiring.. Call and ask the main office.. Sometimes they'll just tell you.. Then apply there and sub there.
