NWR: Thyroid

Does anyone have an over active or under active thyroid? If so...what was your first symptom that you had?

I have an underactive thyroid.

It took YEARS to diagnose because the symptoms are VERY vague and a commonly mistaken for other ailments. Part of what was a signal that I could have it was that it runs in my family and I became lethargic and fatigued. I take a low does of Synthroid to manage it as well as hormones.

I was just told I have an overactive thyroid. Didn't see any symptoms that I knew of, just increased pulse and more anxiety. Didn't notice the anxiety because I get anxious a lot, but I was told that is one effect.

Also I was eating anything I wanted and was shedding weight. An overactive thyroid boosts your metabolism.

underactive thyroid here. I didn't really know but I was super lethargic and always wanted to nap after work!

Re: NWR: Thyroid

In the summer of '06 I went for a routine physcial for nursing school. My bookwork came back and my Dr. told me that my thyroid antibodies are up, but my thyroid function tests we're still normal. She said I 'may have a problem in the future.'
Then about 2 months later I started to become very depresses and sad, forgetful, always cold, my period became heavier than usual (which is very weird because I'm on the pill), constipated (TMI!), and gained maybe 5 lbs.
One day in class my assessment teacher who is so short- she is eye level with my neck- said 'Your tyroid looks enlarged, a little puffy. Do you have a thyroid problem?' And immediately I thought of what my Dr. said a few months back. After class I made the next appt. to see my Dr. They drew blood there. Turns out my TSH was 24... It's supposed to be under 4!
I went on synthroid 25 mcg. Got retested. Went up to 50 mcg. I am all good now! I think that when I get pregnant I just have to watch my levels a little more closely than I do now (I get tested once a yr because I'm stable).
Good luck and FM me if you have any questions!

Thank you for that! I have a doc appointment on the 14th to get everything checked out but from reading alot online, i match like 85% of the symptoms and my mom has hypothyroidism as well.

My gyno always checks her patients' thyroid just by feeling the neck. Last year she said mine felt enlarged and gave me a script to go get tested but i never went. I just went to my annual exam this year in July and she said it felt enlarged again. I guess I should go get it checked out. I am soooo tired ALL of the time

Def get it checked! And they kept asking me if my mother has hypothyroid, so apparently that's a big risk factor. (she doesn't)
