nwr: tires

anyone's fh a mechanic or know about tires???

I got 2 nails in my tire (thanks NYC!) and went this morning and they told me i needed a new tire (they actually said you should change tires in pairs so i should get 2 new ones instead of one).
Anyway, they didnt have the tire in stock so they plugged it. Does anyone know how long a tire plug will last??? The guy said its only a temporary fix but someone at work told me they can last years and to just check to make sure the tire pressure doesnt keep getting low...if it does that means its leaking and then it would be time for a new tire.

anyone have any idea about this? i feel like i get taken advantage of when it comes to car stuff just bc im a female

I hope they didn't charge you more than $10 to plug it, because if they did, I wouldn't go back. If you have a nail and you can plug it, then it's always the best option so that you can look for new tires. RIght now, there's a lot of sales for buy 3, get 1 free.

I had a screw in my tire last week and they plugged it. So far, I haven't had any problems and I drive fast. Sometimes it can last a long time and sometimes it doesn't. I would just prepare for it to fail and start researching now.

I plug my tires (if I get a hole that can be plugged) whever possible. As long as the plug holds there is no need for a new tire especially if you have a lot of life left in the tire. I would just keep an eye on it but you should be fine. I've never had a plug fail. You should puck up a can of fix a flat stuff at your local auto part store. It plugs the hole (generally) long enough for you to get to the closet repair shop if it should happen again. If your tire is old though you might as well replace it.
