pretend not to know.
I'm in a position at work that I know when people are getting laid off before anyone else does and I am sworn to secrecy every single time. It really sucks knowing but if there might be consequences for you if you do say something.

i personally wouldn't tell them Let the person in charge do it and act like you never knew. It's one of those you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't scenarios!
I just feel that kind of information shouldn't be disclosed by anyone that isn't the person who is carrying it out.
With that said, im so sorry to hear about your co-worker. it's def. a tough time.

I wouldnt say anything. What if they decide last minute not to let that person go. Then your coworker is gonna be upset at you and also always going to be worried

I've been in this position and I didn't know WHEN it was coming but I knew they were working on it.
I pretended not to know. We weren't friends and to be honest, she was a horrible worker. I didn't think it was my place to warn her when my boss told me confidential stuff.
I'd stay out of that stuff in general unless it was a close friend
eta: you say it was a friend but are you super tight? Is there ANY chance that it might come out later that you knew?

we are close at work...go to lunch together daily but dont speak much outside of work. i mean i purposely did not send out a STD to any workers bc i know some of them if I/they were to leave i would lose touch with them...and she is one of them. once she is gone i prob wont hear from her again. so it prob wouldnt come out that i knew.
ok thanks for ensuring me that i am doing the right thing!!! you ladies are the best!!!!
