Thanks so much! Do you happen to know which areas are better than others and which ones have better school districts than others???
TIA!

I lived in Valley Stream, that is a very large town so just make sure look into the different areas before making your decision.. some parts are a while from the SSP and there are many school districts if you are thinking about kids..
Franklin Square, Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Malverne, and Floral Park always seemed like nice areas to me.
Massapequa and Wantagh are nice but they are much closer to Plainview... then where you are looking

out of all those towns she listed Rockville Centre probably has the best school district. I would stay away from Elmont and Valley Stream school districts -- they aren't very good. I live in Valley Stream and it's nice and convenient for a young couple but I will be moving away wayyyyy before I start a family! Elmont is the worst neighborhood on the list (no offense to anyone who lives there)! FH's uncle lives in East Meadow and has 3 kids, I think the school district is decent there. I'm not sure about the other towns

Re: NWR - towns to rent/buy apartments or houses
i dont want to start anything but here's my opinion-i would suggest looking up the newsday school reports to find out more information about school districts, but since i work in education i know a decent amount-
out of the ones i listed i would say rvc, merrick and bellmore are the best school districts, followed by east meadow, wantagh and valley stream
bellmore/merrick are combined into 1 high school district, although the elementary schools are 4 different districts east meadow also has parts of westbury go to their schools, but the southern part of east meadow near merrick avenue tends to be the 'better part' valley stream is a central hs district, with south being the best, then north then central floral park and elmont are part of the sewhanaka (sp) district, which also includes carey hs (parts of franklin square), sewhanaka and new hyde park

Agreed. RVC has good schools and I knew someone who was renting in Elmont and broke her lease after a month, she couldn't take living there.

The part of Garden City that borders Hempstead is kind of sketchy.

Bellmore, Rockville Centre, Bethpage, Massapequa (particularly the Plainedge school district), W Hempstead, Half Hollow Hills, Jericho, Syosset, Plainview, Sea Cliff, Seaford, Port Washington, Hicksville is OK, Carle Place. New Hyde Park, Mineola.

RVC has great schools, but it's also very expensive. So your budget will probably dictate which areas work best for you. Levittown is off SSP. The school district is decent in my opinion -- not the best -- not the worst. But it's a very family oriented community and more affordable than Bellmore, RVC, Wantagh. Massapequa ia really nice, but large and depending on where you live, you could end up in Massapequa, Farmingdale or Amityville school district.

Thanks girls..
We don't necessarily care if they are off the parkway, we just care if it is somewhat in the beginning of long island.....if I had it my way, we would my to plainview/old bethpage where I grew up but its too far into long island and his commute to brooklyn everyday would suck and it wouldn't be fair to him.....
We were looking for areas in the beginning of the SSP, like exits 13-19ish so we can be roughly 15 minutes from my parents and about 20 minutes from his.....this will hopefully prevent any FIL fights!!

I wish my FH was that flexible. We bought a house 2 minutes from his parents and 45-50 from mine!!!

That's a great thing to consider. I am so screwed being all the way out here. FH has two kids and my family is not quic to run out here to watch them -- but would do it in a heart beat if they were around the corner. Good thinking! ; )

Re: NWR - towns to rent/buy apartments or houses
I live in Valley Stream and it's gotten a bad rep lately for some reason. It's a HUGE town. I looked up populations, and in the entire state of New York, it has one of the largest populations except for areas that are considered cities. It has good parts and not-so-good parts. There's 3 middle/high schools and a million elementary schools. I would research each school district before making a decision.
