Hey girls. Im heading to the DMV to change my step-fathers car title over to me since he gave me his car. Does anyone know how this works and if it costs anything?? I want to be prepared and Im having a hard time finding detailed info on the internet!

I just did this in December & needed all of this:
-Insurance coverage & proof for the car -Registration application (on the DMV website- just google NY DMV) -Application for no sales tax- its something that you & your stepdad sign saying the car was a gift (also on the website) -Bill of Sale- you have to create this yourself, there are instructions on the DMV website that say what has to be in it
ETA: Your stepfather also needs to sign the current title over to you- DMV will take that & mail you a new one in your name
I think it was about $150 for the new title, plates, registration, etc.

definately gift- otherwise you need to pay sales tax on the transaction & they take credit card.
