NWR - Turtles OH MY and EGGS!

Well today I was cleaning up the turtle bin and what did I discover EGGS! I realized my poor old gal Killian (35 years old) hasn't been eating and she has been digging around. I have no intention on keeping the eggs at all so dug them up and plan to commit turtle abortion (smashing of the eggs). I do not want to populate the world with hybrid babies for people take and toss away with in a few years. So here are some pics of the eggs and my dearest Corrigan and my gal Aryana (who after on year of being missing came back to me)

ENJOY!

This one has dagan sneaking in to take the mealworm.

Nah the other one who i took in as a rescue about two years ago is the one that was prego. Then again all my girls could be prego because they were living with the male until recently when he got his operation for his abscess.

I feel guilty keeping another four - five turtles. Its hard to house them mostly you need lots of room. Outside I need to build another pen as is for next season to keep the male seperate. They are usually 4 x 6 pens with a cover. In winter I bring them in so its usually one to two turtles a 50 gal bin. So for me now i am at three 50 gal bins.

FH and I dont have house we will live in a apartment and that is why we can't move out yet because we can't find one with a backyard I can use and have enough room to house them in the winter. SO having a turtle is hard work and they live 50-100 years so i am stuck with them

Her previous owner was a older lady who had her she said for about 35 years .. so she might be older or younger (who knows) but from the looks of her she is that old. The owner died left her to a turtle rescue place who asked me to take her in since i am one of the few that have her species really.

Re: NWR - Turtles OH MY and EGGS!

i have the proper NYS permits to allow one male eastern turtle which i do have and three three toed box turtles. Actually you reminded me that i have send my $10 in to renew my permits IoI

And yes any box turtle is illegal to own/posses unless you have the proper documentation.

Those turtles are soo cute. Kudos too you for being like the only person I know to take turtle ownership to heart. . And i completely agree with disposing of the eggs as to not over populate. People yell at me all the time since im an advocate for spaying cats during early pregnancy. The way I see it, its better to control the population through early preg termination that it is through euthanasia.

What an awsome story! I commend you for doing what you did. I think that they are a long term pet and alot of people would not be up for the 'challenge'
