NWR: tutoring/fellow teachers

Original post by soon2bmrsVPT

Any idea how I can get my name out to start tutoring? I would like to do this on the side but I am so lost as to how to start. Do any of my fellow teachers tutor on the side? Any info to share?? Thanks!

I already sent my resume and cover letter to 2 popular learning centers. We'll see what happens!

Thanks in advance for any info!

If you teach on the secondary level, you could ask the guidance counselors that you work with to recommend you to the parents. Parents are always asking counselors where they can find a tutor. I used to tutor so much, but I'm too busy for it now!

just be careful if you do this in NYC - stick with parents you know because its in our contract that we cant tutor our own students in or out of school for money

I teach on the Island, and that isn't in my contract. The counselors stress the fact that any tutoring should be done at the public library, and NOT at the house of the tutor or child. But that should be common sense anyway.

the easiest way to get into tutoring is to utilize your colleagues!! a fellow teacher referred to me 2 students in her class this year that needed help and whose parents were lookign for a tutor. in my district, you are not allowed to tutor any child in your class, but you can tutor kids in the district. so it works out great! also, it depensd on the district your in too.... a lot of girls in my district (which happens to be one of the wealthier ones) get up to $70.00 an hour or more.... i dont' charge that much, particularly for families that i know can't afford it.

my district also compiles a list of district teachers that are interested in tutoring and supplies that to parents who ask for someone.

if your'e not currently teaching somewhere put an ad in the pennysaver or your card in supermarkets, etc. etc. to get the word out.

ETA: i think you'll make more money with individual parents/families than at a tutoring center... you'll make more per hour plus, it's straight cash--- no taxes

Thanks for your kind words Danielle. I will be sure to read, or let him read what you wrote. More than anything, he feels like everyone in class is smarter than him. And I hate that, because we're all different, and excel at different things. I always let him know a C is passing, and reassure him that school just started and things will progressively get better. I ALWAYS use positive re-enforcement with him, and it helps tremendous amounts. Pass or no pass, he's still a star in my eyes, and thats what matters. But I'll try my hardest to get his confidence up, and be sure he tries to the best of his ability to do well. Thats what mothers are for

Hi melanie...
as a teacher, jsut thought i would comment... i wouldn't worry too much.... i am sure he is going to do fine.... you're aware of the problem and are getting him extra support. i think ti's great that he is getting the AIS math....that should help. also, please dont' be afraid to ask his teacher and the AIS teacher for specific details on what is causing him difficulty and what you can do to help him at home. there are so many math games, etc. etc. and fun ways to help him that won't cost you anything except maybe some extra time in the evenings. i work with severely Learning disabled children and i wish some of my parents would actualyl heed my advice in terms of what they can do to help...

also, i know it's extra money, but soemtimes it's better to go with a teacher ONLY because they know the curriculum and HOW it's being taught to him. sometimes the most confusing thing for a kid is to get one way at school and antoher way at home or with a tutor. the tutoring centers, etc. are okay but sometimes i feel like they are focusing more on standaridzed tests, etc. and every kid in the group gets the same thing... they dont' always have the means or time to really individualize for ONE kid, and frankly, that's what tutoring should be...

hope this helps... he'll be fine!!
