I'm sooooo Pissed right now! I go to stony brook univ. and i got a letter the other day saying that they accidentally handed out my social security number to everyone on the internet, and i should put out fraud alerts on my credit files so that no one can steal my identity! so i call the number and they told me that placing a fraud alert doesnt mean that much and people can still get credit cards in my name but to have it fully monetered i have to sign up with them for a fee of course but since stony brook realized it was their fault they will pay half.... thats right folks half..... i pay them thousands and thousands of dollars and they hand out my ssn and they cant even cough up a hundred to secure my identity! I am honestly shaking right now....and i thought i hated this school before!!!!!!!!
sorry... im just really upset right now

I got the same letter from Stonybrook. I knida just figured that I would be okay, that might be silly of me but I don't want to panic over nothing, so I will wait and see and just check my statements very carefully

OMG that is so scary, and really unfair, unfortunatly to open an credit card in someones name all u really need is a SS# birthday name address.
I suggest u monitor ur credit anyway, i know my FH does this he subscibes to experian and checks his credit all the time.
But it really is unfair that a school would do this to you after all th emoney you pay them

That sounds like a z100 phone tap. I can't believe that! OMG! You could probably sue. They are responsible for that information!

I am so sorry. That is really terrible. My ex had my SS# and cause me nothing but problems. I finally put the fraud alert on my credit and now... it makes it so hard for me to get any type of credit. Anything I apply for I have to wait weeks for them to 'verify' that it was actually me that applied for the credit. Although it *****... I can tell you that with the fraud alerts you really dont have to worry about anyone else using your info. It makes it next to impossible for anyone else to get credit in your name. I am really sorry they did this to you.

Wait, that is ridiculous!! Can you possibly sue them for something like that? I think you should definitely look into that...you can't let them get away with that..

I would recommend at least calling the number and putting the fraud alerts out, with all the stuff that's been happening lately.... I work with a lawyer now so I am going to see if there is a way that I can make them pay to have my credit monitored for a year or so...
