NWR: Want to Buy a Toy Dog

NWR: Want to Buy a Toy Dog

Can you recommend breeders or pet stores that I can purchase a teacup yorkie, maltese, shitzu, morkie or shitzu-maltese mix?

EVERYONE says their dogs are top of the line. I don't know who to trust.

I've already looked into adoption. All the dogs are either too big or have health problems. I would like to buy a healthy cute dog.

We got our boggle - beagle/boston terrier mix - at American Dog Club on Willis Avenuue in Albertson. They specialize in small dogs. My FILs also got their cockapoo there. We never had any problems with either dogs, all healthy and really wonderful personalities.

Our dog bailey is my avatar pic. HTH!

Edited to add: they have a lot of diff breeds in the store even if you want to just pop in and see some diff types of dogs. They are very helpful and you can play with the dogs to check out demeanor etc.

Think long and hard before you get a dog. They are not just cute 'toys' and NEVER go to a breeder that advertises 'teacup' dogs - there is no such thing.

I got a yorkie one year ago and he is wonderful, but very costly, and it's also like having an actual child around....we have to figure out what to do with him when we leave for the weekend, we can't just not come home at regular times every night...we have to feed him on a schedule. He has ripped up a lot of crap in our apartment.....the list goes on.

Just be sure you are REALLY ready. Seriously.

I second Petite pets in Huntington! Call and ask to speak to Barbara she's the owner. They have all of the dogs you mentioned I believe. She has been dealing with the same breeder for many years.

My Yorkie, Bailey, is the love of my life. He is a ton of work but totally worth it. He will be 1 year old on the 20th and is 4 lbs.

We got out baby from Puppies by Marie. She has wonderful puppies, all imported from Ireland.

You can check them out at

Feel free to FM me for more info.

My hubby and I recently adopted an adult toy yorkie. A friend was moving into a new building that didn't allow dogs. The yorkie is 6 years old, he is already wee wee pad trained and so well behaved!! he's just a big furbaby and likes to cuddle all the time. It was a very easy adjustment. I would reconsider adoption. Most of my friends who have adopted have had wonderful experiences. When you get a puppy, one of you should always be home to train, etc. do you work?

I purchased my Kobie Rae from Shake-a-Paw in Hicksville! Love him to death and cannot imagine being without him, but he is SOOOOOOOO much work....

many 'purebred' dogs have TONS of health problems!! don't assume your dog is going to be healthy because you spent $$$ on it!

Go to dog shows. There are obviously a lot of good breedrs there and they can educate you on the breed.

DO NOT buy from pet shops. I don't want to offend anyone, but buying from a pet shop more than likely supports a puppy mill out there.

Adoption and breeders are your two best options.

I second this. Our purebred Sheltie ended up having epilepsy.

And even the ones that have signs saying that they do not get dogs from puppy mills....many of them have been exposed for lying about that. Contact a rescue group for the breed you want. You might be surprised at the great dogs they have available. If they have none, they often know of breeders. Also, think about whether you really want a toy. I have a standard dachshund and I am involved in dachshund owner groups. My dog is not as fragile as the mini-dachshunds that some of my friends have. People with the smaller pups really worry about whether kids will accidentally hurt their dog, etc.

I dont want to offend anyone either, but please do not buy from petshops, or petstores. They lie and say they get their dogs from breeders when in reality there are a few poor dogs, in cages their whole lives who just keep being bred one painful year after another. Most of these puppymills, are in pennsylvania, and missouri. Any reputable breeder who cares about their animals would never sell their dogs to a petshop. Puppymill dogs are shipped via tractor trailer, stacked on top of eachother, where the whole ride they are hot, no food or water, and they go to bathroom on eachother, its horrible. Wait outside any petstore at around 4am til 6am in teh morning and watch the truck loads of puppies being brought in, and you will see how bad the conditions are.
Get educated before you put more money in the terrorists (puppymill owners) pockets. PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATIVE WEBSITE BEFORE BUYING A DOG!!!!!

Please go to a reputabe breeder, NOT a petstore...my mom bought a 'tecup' yorkie (in quotes b/c there is no such thing) from puppy city and she has horrible congenital defects and i don't even want to think about what goes on at puppy mills
