NWR: Washington DC Recs?

My FH is graduating this month, and I am sooo proud of him. I want to surprise him with a trip or gift. He is a huge history buff, and I know he would love a trip to DC for a weekend. Can anyone make any good hotel recommendations? I heard they're are parts of DC that are scary, so I just want to be sure I book something convenient and safe.

TIA!!

FH and I stayed at the Wyndham City Center in DC (Foggy Bottom area..) It was really nice and in a nice neighborhood. The metro was close by also (two different stations ) and a lot of cute places to eat nearby. (Plus a Starbucks We are both addicts!) I would highly recommend them... great service nice rooms!

How many nights/days do you think we'll need in DC? Is Thurs - Sun sufficient, or do youn think we can do it Fri-Sun? Thanks again!!

The St. Regis is really nice and it's right down the block from the White House.

Avoid anything in South East Washington, abbreviated SE in the address.

Foggy Bottom is a great area as it has the most activity. Downtown hotels are generally nice (ones near Union Station) but the area is DEAD on the weekends.
