NWR: Well it contributes to the wedding BUT I need some job/$ advice
So I got a promotion 6 months back. I was thrilled, really proud of myself, but there was a catch... b/c of the economy, my raise got delayed until Fall. Fine. So today, I met with the boss, and inquired about what month I would be able to expect it. WELLLLL now I'm being told next year.
Am I getting yanked around? To me, I don't know why I'm getting jerked around. I do a ton more work, and there is nothing to compenstate it. How long is too long to wait for a raise, like, legally? is there anything legal about it?
Its putting a delay on the house thing (I was hoping to save some more $$ for a down payment to keep the mortage low), and we really were relying on the extra $$ for the wedding. Now I feel really let down.
What do you think?

If it makes you feel any better, my agency isn't giving out any raises at all this year because of budget cuts. Guess I just have to be happy I still have a job

I don't know about the legal aspect, but did they give you anything in writing? It is so tough with the economy right now, so it's not surprising, but I understand your frustration. Did you question them when they told you you had to wait until next year?

My company is not giving raises/bonuses this year either because of the economy. I think the company gave you the promotion as a way of recognizing what a great job you’re doing-so don’t feel jerked around- time’s are really tough right now…

is it possible to get a bonus? i believe raises and bonuses are taxed a bit differently (not 100% sure), but it might be worth asking the question.
you do deserve to be compensated in some way.... but im not sure what real recourse you have.

I am very grateful for the job and I am still so proud to hold the position. I know that there were budget cuts, but fall should never have been told to me. I'm just worried, b/c 3 times is a charm, and i betcha they will pull some $hyt by telling me in January that its postponed again.
Oh well, thats life I guess. Now to break the news to FH, who will Vomit.

Me too... mine told us last year not to expect any raises until 2010, we had tons of lay offs, so I'm not gonna complain, I still have a job. I'm in the real estate/new construction market, we are hurtingggg!!

Bonues here are based on years spent here, not on Merit. Please don't even get me started about my bonus :) My company bundles it all into 1 paycheck, so the taxes beat my coolie...

Yes a lot of companies are struggling bc of the economy therefore not doing raises or bonuses. However, if this is something that was discussed with you getting the promotion then you are getting the run around. The bad news is your not in the drivers seat, since the economy blows therefore no jobs available and they know you need the $$$ for wedding house stuff, they will continue to give you the run around.
Honestly, I would have a very serious talk with them. Just tell them you are not happy, don't theaten to leave but let them know how you feel, sometimes this works....maybe they could even give you 1/2 now and 1/2 in January. That's how I would play it.

It's a huge bummer, but I don't think they are necessarilly yanking you around. My company took our measley increase away - the DAY before it was supposed to be in our checks!!! They really pulled the rug out from under us. But, like Laura said, I am feeling lucky to have a job. And I've never been that type of person before - always believed I'm such a hard worker and asset, but these are the times. FH and I have put the house hunt on hold and are just concentrating on wedding expenses. One life-changing event at a time. . .
