about a week ago FMIL (the office manager) & our boss asked me to take note of what time the other employees come into work. they don't stroll in until after 9am. they take an hour lunch break and are in the elevator to leave by 5pm. i understand that they want me to tell them because the employees are getting paid for an 8 hour day & not putting in 8 hours but i also don't want to be a rat. i take care of all the office bank accounts & see that with the economy we are struggling too.
can someone please offer me some help in this situation????

i agree, you don't want to turn everyone that you work with against you, it will make for a very uncomfortable situation

And since it is your FMIL...I might just tell her that she is putting you in a bad situation.

Well the problem is, what happens if they find out you aren't telling them when people are coming in????
At my first job out of college, my boss made the receptionist call her every morning at 8:30 (when we were supposed to be in) and tell her who was there and who wasn't. It was terrible. But we didn't get mad at the receptionist. We all knew it was part of her job and she was just covering herself.

If anything just give the people in ur office the heads up that the bosses are looking to crack down a little bit and for the next couple of weeks do the right thing... Then when things settle down they can go back to doing what theyre doing...

just putting this out there -- and i dont kno the people you work with -- but what if you were to tell the people that you need to start keeping track of employee time and explain that it puts you in a bad situation but you just cant risk your job or your relationship with FMIL by not complying...and then ask them to please come in on time so its not an issue for anyone.
or if they are going to be late to call?
i dont know. i think its very dependent on how well you get along with the office workers. if you dont get along with them, im not sure if i would give them a heads up....

I agree. I think maybe you should give them a heads-up that they are making you record the times everyone comes and goes. I think this would make them be a little more careful about arriving on-time and not taking long breaks.

Re: NWR- what would you do???
then i would def give them a heads up. especially if you are all friendly.
if it was a big office (like 20+ ppl) i wouldnt recommend it because ppl like to gossip and it would end up backfiring.
p.s. i also think your FMIL is putting you in an akward position. but i guess you gotta do what the bosses ask.

It's not your job! It's the job of the office manager to see that the employees are on time or not . FMIL or not she is putting you in a sticky situation. I would tell her you feel uncomfortable doing that. Whats up with her anyway she can't keep track of you & 3 other people. It's not fair that she has you doing her dirty work.

Re: NWR- what would you do???
i was just give the others a heads up. Thats what we do in our office. Especially with the way the economy is you dont want anyone to lose their jobs over something stupid. But FMIL never should have put you into that position.

I totally agree with everyone who said to give them a heads up. Just let them know that they are being watched and to be careful.

it kinda is my job since i take care of the office bank accounts & budgeting. it is a law firm so my boss always has court in the morning & since FMIL stays late at night (till 7PM) getting last minute stuff ready for the court appearance, there is no way she can be in by 9AM.
