NWR - Where should I live?

NWR - Where should I live?

I've come to the realization that FI and I will not be able to afford a house on Long Island. It would be possible if we were to move out east, but it's bad enough I have an hour commute to my job from lindenhurst, and FI is on the train for an hour to get to the city. We are in a really nice 2 bedroom apartment in a house right now, but God forbid the landlord sells her home or passes away. I feel like we are just wasting out money paying rent instead of investing in a mortgage. So I was thinking of moving to manhattan where maybe we can get a co-op or something. I've always wanted to live in the city and it would be a shorter commute for FI and me. Any advice?

Apartments are Sooooo expensive and in most cases, you have maintenance fees on top of that. If you can't afford a house on Long Island, chances are you're not going to be able to afford an apartment in Manhattan either. The up side is you won't have transportation expenses--car insurance, gas, car payments, etc.

Maybe try New Jersey? but any place within commuting distance is expensive...

Well, co-ops in Manhattan are expensive. Someone I work with recently bought one for a little over $500,000 for a one bedroom on the Upper East Side. Maintenance fees are another $850 on top of that. Granted, it is a doorman building with a gym, etc., but Manhattan is pricey. If you are willing to go to Queens, Long Island City, or another borough I am sure you could get cheaper, but Manhattan itself will be more expensive than many areas of Long Island, for less space...

Im just really freakin out, because I really dont know what Im going to do. I live in a nice apartment now, but its in a house. I know I cant live there forever and I just dont want to waste money renting an apartment. It just really frustrates me that LI is just getting ridiculously expensive, that not even the average joe can afford a decent house. Sorry to be so

We were going to buy a house out east also because that is the only place where we can afford to. We don't work in the city now but my FH might in the future. And for me, all the good jobs in my industry are in New Jersey. We decided to hold off on the house because I have always wanted to move off LI and now I think my FH is starting to agree with me.

What about those garden apartments in Queens like in Glen Oaks? If I am finding that we arent getting the down payment for a house fast enough, thats what I hope to do. We are also living in an apt. in a private house and it is great byt every month we are practically burning the money where as it could be going towards a mortgage.

That is why I'm in GEORGIA.. I am from Sag Harbor, and houses start at $500k, for a small house.. Here you can get a huge mansion for that!!! I miss new york though. Someday, we'll be back out there I HOPE

What about Connecticut or Massachusettes.. our cousins live their and they found a nice home for pretty decent money..

GOOD LUCK

Diva --- I have a really great co-op for sale in Oakland Gardens, which is Bayside on the border of Nassau. The express bus to Manhattan is 1 block away. It is right off the Grand Central and Cross Island. It takes me about 20 minutes to get from there to where I live now, Seaford. It's a great investment because instead of paying rent, youpay a mortgage on somehting that is YOURS. You can only make $$ on it because there is no more room to build in QUeens and the apts. are going so fast. I bought it 2 years ago and prices have almost doubled. It's 1 bedroom, but you can make $ on it and in a year move somewhere big with some return on your investment. Great location, great apt...
FM me if you want to know more.

Re: NWR - Where should I live?

Im really just thinking out loud to myself. So many things going on in my life. We cant move out of state because of FI's job. It's one of those positions that was created for him so he wont be able to find the same thing and make the same amount of money. My parents are moving to Florida, FFIL is moving to florida, my sister - my FSIL - and my FMIL all live in florida. We've been getting pressure to move there, but I just cant take the heat. I'd rather take 2 feet snow over a hot day in florida. Three of my friends just bought houses over $300k. Its just everthing thats going on around me that makes me realize we need to do something. Obviously nothing can be done until after the wedding, but it is all just so overwhelming.

From what I hear apts. in Manhattan are VERY expensive. But this is just from what I hear from others who are looking in that area.
But then again, everywhere in NY is expensive.

You both work in Manhattan? try brooklyn.
there are soemreally nice co-ops there. Expensive, but not as expensive as manhattan. Quuens to, but I find ther eare more palces in brooklyn that are near multiple subway lines, but wth either burough if you go too far out its an hour on the subway or bus.

The cost of housing is crazy. I think we are settling for a co-op, b/c if we bought a house it would probably be in New hHampshire or maine & that is too cold for me & too far from my family.

Try Queens. Depends what you're looking to spend as to the area but FH and I are hoping to be in the Bayside area after we get married in a co-op. We're in Forest Hills now and that's a possibility as well. We can't afford a house either right now but definitely want to stop throwing our money away on rent! This is a nice half-way point.
