NWR: Will I be able to afford to live in NYC?

okay ladies..I had a sleepless night last night. I have a lot of BIG changes going on now. Besides the wedding, I am moving from Atlanta to NYC. FH lives in the Bronx (renting at the moment) but he is aware that I want to buy a home. I currently have a home here in Atlanta with my mom and we are selling it because I am moving to NYC to be with FH. I am doubting whether or not we will be ever to afford to buy anything in NYC. Has anyone ever been in this predictment? Please offer me some advice. FH and I have a five year old son and I want a backyard and a home to entertain family members.

I have been searching condo/co-ops on craigslist, and nytimes, but everything is $$$$$$. I can't believe the prices, and I am beginning to wonder, and freak out about whether or not I will be giving up on my dream to have a home. FH is aware of this, and my compromise is that we could get a condo/coop till we can buy something bigger.

Bottom line, i don't know if we can afford NYC which is keeping me up at night. TIA ladies.

I'll be completely honest... it IS expensive! But it totally depends where you want to live. If you're ok staying in the Bronx, you can get a house for less there than on Long Island (where they're $$$$).

My FH and I wonder how we'll do it too. lol

OK well here is the thing, you can't have a house with a yard in NYC. Are you looking for westchester, staten island, bronx, brooklyn, queens, Long island??

The city itself is very expensive and when ever any of us move there we gasp a little and then adjust but if you are looking outside of the city there are more affordable areas then others.

We are looking at westchester, because FH works in Elmsford and I will be working in Yonkers. However, we are open to staying in the Bronx. I don't know NY that well to know what areas are good school districts, and are good areas to live. FH is currently in Parkchester and I was considering buying a 2 bedroom there, but the parking is CRAZY!!!!!!

It is very overwhelming and I wonder how do people do it. Even with 2 incomes it seems that it would be a struggle. You pay your rent/mortgage and the rest of your bills then what???? It seems like we are going to be living paycheck to paycheck. Which I don't want to do!!! You would think that 2 incomes would make it easier all around. And it is becoming apparent to me that we are going to be struggling, and that scares me, particulary when money is such a factor in relationships ending.

NYS as a whole is really expensive FH and I live upstate, he commutes to Elmsford about once a month for a week. We bought a 100 year old home on an acre for $200,000 (& it was a deal!), our friends live in Yorktown and have a house on an acre and it's about $600,000. FH's brother just bought a house in North Carolina, about half the size of ours but on 2 acres for $115,000.

Try to keep your options open, lots of people commute longer distances in order to live in a more affordable place - my cousin kept an apt. in NYC and had his house and family in Albany (2.5 hours north of the city). You may consider buying a two-family in a nice area so your house brings you income, my sister did that and the rent from her tenant covers a good portion of her mortgage.

Good Luck

NYC as a whole is expensive... queens, the bronx and staten island are more affordable than brooklyn or manhattan. however, since you are both working in westchester, the bronx may be a good option.

Check out the Throgg's Neck area... ALL houses, great neighborhood and the public schools are good... Also check out the Woodlawn section of the Bronx (very close to Yonkers... also a lot of houses. Riverdale is nice too...

There are also affordable condos / apartments in the Pelham bay and Parkchester areas. Also, although the neighborhood might be okay, check out the public schools. some in the bronx are terrible and you may end up having to spend more money on tuition.

GOOD LUCK!

I agree with the ladies--NYC as a whole is expensive. Even with a 2 income household, it can be a struggle. You can look in the Bronx or even in places upstate closer to where you and FH work.

NYc is super expensive - we pay just for the name. I am way nervous just about moving from my parents house in BK to a new place with Fh.

Definitly use CRAIGSLIST.com - my friend just moved into an afforable apartment and she found it on that site.

Good luck! Dont stress - you'll find a way
