OK, so in case not everyone knows, I am an HIV social worker. Today I met with a new French speaking client, Wth 2 young daughters (9 &11 years old) After I interviewed her, the doctor needed me to translate for him. So we are in the exam room and she is telling me that her period has been lasting one month since she got the depo shot about a year ago, and we told her ok, we will schedule her for a gyn appt. Everything is going well, and then she says to me, well my bf was giving me a pill. So I said ok, what was the name of the pill, she says she does not know, but her bf told her it would help her gain weight. but he always gave it to her with the label ripped off. So immediately I tell the doctor, I think he has been giving her Atripla (an HIV med) and we ask her to describe it, and she says its a big yellow pill, so we say ok it's not Atripla, we show her a chart of all the HIV meds and she points to one and says there it is as she pointed to a particular medication called Kaletra.Turns out that this sob bf of hers never told her he was infected, was having unprotected sex with her and was giving her his medications and she was nievly taking them, and possibly helping her build drug resistance. . Which is awful to have if you are HIV positive. We think he told her the pill would help her gain weight because some people who have infected with HIV have wasting syndrome, where they lose alot of weightAfter we told her, this poor lady started to cry so bad. OMG what is wrong with people?

That's gotta be some job, let me tell you. I've had a few HIV patients and in addition to dealing with their medical condition you have to help them balance their mental and emotional health which is so hard... I don't envy you and I totally see your need to vent.
What a crappy situation! I hope her test somehow comes negative. And what an idiot a) giving her his HIV meds meaning HE isn't taking them and b) they're not going to be effective enough on her even if hse's positive if they aren't the right prescription for her! DIdn't you want to kill him?

That is absolutely horrible. What an a**. How could someone do that to someone. One of my FH friends lost his sister to aids. She was dating a guy who was cheating on her he infected her. It was a very short time after she was diagnosed before she passed. It makes me so sad to hear they there are people like that in the world

I think I would have screamed and jumped at him if he was around. Poor lady now cooks with gloves on because she is so worried about infecting her 2 children. Some people are so horrible.

that is horrible and i can't believe there are people out there like that. And that's her bf - great guy . that's a shame and must be so hard to deal with

wow...i am about to cry. I feel sick to my stomach when I hear these stories. Poor woman and her children.
I applaud you for doing what you do. I couldn't do it in a million years. I'd want to hunt the guy down myself and do this

also, can't she have him arrested? Having unprotected sex when you know you have hiv/aids is a crime, isn't it? Remember reading a story about a group of women infected by the same creep got him locked up.
i hope she presses charges if she can
eta: maybe i misread it, she was already infected and he was giving her pills she shouldnt have been taking or he infected her without her knowing?

It's only a misdemeanor in NY to knowingly have sex with someone while you're infected with a 'venereal disease' and not disclose it to them

Are you kidding? Thats criminal! I don't know how you do your job. You're amazing.
My friend works for the WHO and she spent a year in africa treating and educating HIV patients. Her stories break my heart.
