NWR: Worried about my job

i am 99% sure my department will be laying off people. i work for a big brokerage company & we had a really bad year so i am not surprised. i have been with the company for almost 15 yrs & know i would get a good severants package.
i'm just worried about being able to find ANOTHER job due to current market conditions. i guess i should update my resume just in case.

i just hate having this feeling of uncertainty. especially so close to my wedding. i feel like just when my life is about to start with FH this happens

well i hope i am worrying for nothing. but is really a horrible environment to work in & hate to see anybody lose their job.

i know what you mean. when i got a job at Merrill, it was a year after 9/11 and they were laying off all over the place. I didn't even know why they hired me, plus I was always paranoid because I didn't feel like I was busy enough. I always thought I'd be next.

It got so bad I developed stomach issues from all the stress that are STILL not totally gone. I ended up working there for just under two years and finding another job. I would say definitely update your resume, maybe post it on monster just for peace of mind.

thanks for understanding.. its just hard to worry about this & start a job search so close to my wedding. i keep analysing my boss & how he acts around me.

are you still in the finance industry? i am thinking of just going into a totally different area. problem is i am so spoiled getting my annual bonus every year.

I'm not - I couldn't deal with it! I can deal with stress and all that but it was so cuthroat there - i hated it. I'm in consulting and believe it or not my bonuses and salary are way better - but in Merrill I was in HR so that's probably why.

you could drive yourself crazy over this - I think i started feeling better once I got my resume done and did some job searching. But I really wanted out - not sure you do but the stress isn't always worth it.

I understand that totally! They will be laying a lot people off at my job in 'days or weeks' - nice long time to worry!! :( I didn't think that our location would affected but we found out last week it will be. So I'm freaking out about losing my job :( I have to brush up my resume anyway.

it's never a good feeling...and it's also hard to deal with!

ive been with my company for 4 years now and i think ive seen like 4 or 5 waves of layoffs (if not more...i can't remember anymore because we have so many...and often!)

sometimes though it does give people a fresh start doing something else. a lot of people that got laid off at my company are actually in better positions now because of it (and a lot happier).

OH my gosh...I thought maybe we worked for the same company...today they laid off 30 people at my job....I had to wait until 5:00pm to find out if I was getting cut or not - they made us wait allllll day. I feel for you - Good Luck with everything

My FSIL works for JPMorgan Chase and she's in the same boat as you... hang in there
