My sister just had a baby last month - this is my first neice and I'm overjoyed of course. She got lots of great gifts from our family but she mentioned to my mom that she was disappointed at a few family members who either didn't give anything, or gave something cheap - ie, our uncle gave a bamboo plant...I can understand being disappointmed at getting that for a new baby, but she also mentioned to my mom that she was disappointed at my gift...besides the fact that I spent hundreds of dollars on baby gifts between the baby shower and Christmas...she was disappointed that when the baby was born all she got from me was a $25 baby gap gift card, a dozen roses and a pink bear for the baby. Now is it just me, or is she being greedy?
My mom suggested I should've given a $50 gift card, considering I addressed it from me and my FI, but is she forgetting about the bear and the roses?
The fact that she'd put me in the same category as someone who gave a bamboo plant really upsets me.

Sometimes people don't get the whole picture. I think it was wrong for your sister to say that, but I also think it was wrong for your mother to tell you that. I'd be mad too, but let it go. Hormones do crazy things!!

It would annoy me. I think she is being selfish, considering the fact that you could have given her nothing, especially since you had already given so much. I would talk to her.

I'd be so annoyed and I'd tell my sister off. Lots of people have babies and don't use their pregnancies as excuses to be rude. It's just poor.
I can think of a million reasons why I could be a snot. And I'm sure you could think of a million reasons why you could be.
Bad days and bad months are no excuses for bad behavior.

Re: NWR: would this annoy you?
maybe if u left out the dozen roses and bear and added that 25$ to the gift card to make it a total of 50 bux wouldve made her happy
but yes, since u stated you've already bought her stuff, and your an AUNT - you will probably end up getting her something for every occassion...so i think she is being a little greedy...
dont let it get to u so much

I'm sorry but that's ridiculous! Frst of all, as an aunt of 3 I can tell you, you have their entire lives to spoil them rotten. Take your sis' feelings and chalk it up to hormones- my SIL didn't act that way but she got very depressed after having a baby- they say it's quite normal. Sorry you have to go through this...

Is this for the shower or for the birth?? I didn't know you had to buy expensive gifts when the baby was born. I would def be upset! My sister is thankful everytime I do anything for my niece!! She should be happy that you are in this babies life!

I understand how you would be annoyed, but I would not make an issue of it. Your sister knows what you've done for her, so don't worry too much about your mom.

I would be annoyed too, but could it also be that your mom is exaggerating? If she's anything like my mom, your sister might have said something off-hand like, 'uncle joe gave me a bamboo plant and my sister gave me $25' and your mom interpreted it the wrong way.
But regardless, I think you've been very generous (and I'm sure will continue to be!).

i would def be annoyed .. i mean first of all its shouldn't be the amount of the gift that matters .. i am sure you spent enough $$$ before the baby was born .. so giving what you gave after the baby was born i think was perfectly suitable ... people make such a big deal over gifts .. they should just be happy you are sharing in their happy moment ...

Re: NWR: would this annoy you?
wow..since when is having a baby about what gifts people get you? Your sister has a brand new baby girl..she shouldn't be worried about what she did or did not get from people.
Besides, don't most people just buy the baby stuff before its bron and then send flowers or balloons or somethign when its born? Thats what we did when our niece was born... just sent a nice bouquet with a balloon...but I don't feel cheap about it because we got her tons of stuff before she was born, then fr the christening, and every occasion we get...and I'm sure u will do the same!
So to answer your question..yes that would definitely annoy me!

Re: NWR: would this annoy you?
I think that's incredibly selfish and rude for anyone to comment about any gifts they received. NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE is entitled to gifts - for anything!
It sounds like she's being bratty and acting very entitled... I'd be upset, but try to just move on and not think about it.
She should be thrilled to just have a healthy baby and a family who cares enough to be happy for her, let alone get her gifts at all. If that were one of my siblings, my mom would have told them exactly what she thought... more or less what I just posted, plus the fact that you gave so much in the interim.

Re: NWR: would this annoy you?
You know... now that I am thinking about it... I got a TON of flowers and stuff for ME at the hospital... but I got practically NOTHING for the babies... a few clothes but nothing crazy. I didn't think twice about it since I had gotten SO MUCH STUFF at the showers.
I would let it go. She is a new mom and was probably just venting. Tell your mom that you feel that your gift was appropriate in light of all the other stuff you have given and leave it at that.

Re: NWR: would this annoy you?
I would have replied to my mom how surprised and disappointed I was of her even agreeing with your sister. Then promptly remind her and your sister how much money you spent already on the shower and Christmas. That if you happen to grow a money tree or win the lotto, you would be happy to share the $$ but until then, some appreciation for the time and money you put into it already would have been nice.
