ok- so i'm a speech teacher at an elemntary school. one of my girls is in 4th grade ( so like 9 or 10 years old). she comes in with a new coach bag every couple weeks, nail tips, talking about her trips to turks and caicos,etc..... so the other day she said something about her dad being a lawyer, and i asked where her mom worked and she goes ' oh, my mom doesn't work- her job is shopping. my daddy makes a lot of money!' it was just soo crazy to hear this stuff coming from a 9 year old- LOL.... i barely knew what money was when i was that age!

Wow, it's one thing to have money, it's another to be putting nail tips on a 9 year old and buying her new Coach bags all the time. Good lesson in values ?? That's just crazy.

that is crazy. I was getting my nails done a couple of weeks ago and there were a group of girls in there and it was the same thing- designer bags, nails, a couple were getting their eyebrows done and I swear they weren't any older than 10. I think I had a very sheltered childhood!

LOL my little sister is like that, she thinks her daddy is rich (he's a supervisor of the folks that fix the MTA trains) and he takes her on a cruise every year (this will be the 3rd year), gives her a birthday party every year with clowns and all and buys her Dooney and Bourke bags (the little ones). My mom and I think it's ridiculous for an 8 year old to have this stuff but whatever. I can't wait for her to get her first car. I always tell my mom, I'm glad we're so far apart (16 years) because when she gets married, no one will remember how my wedding paled in comparison.

That type of attitude makes me sick!!!! This world is so messed up already. And to think that this little girl is what our future is! Her parents must be so materialistic! I hope I never make my kids feel like money is the most important thing in life. Geesh! Ok, I'm done now. I feel much better.

personally, i think it's disgusting! growing up dirt poor, having things like that are earned not given to a tween. secondly, i despise when people try to grow up their little girls to look like women. and lastly, it just makes me prouder of who i am and what i've done to hear things like that because my values would never let my daughter feel such entitlement!

You are soooo right!!! What is this child learning.... NOTHING. She will have no idea of the real world or any real values. She already doesn't appreciate or understand the value of money. I really worry for our future. I dont' think I could ever work at a school environment like that. How could you possibly think you could get through to these children when they come from such materilaistic homes?

Who knows though if they are really rich.. the mother could be charging up a storm and not have the $$ to pay the bill. You just don't know what people's situations really are like. if they are rich.. more power to them lol. I'd like to be rich right now in looking at the prices of houses now.. it's so depressing! But I would agree not to give the child all of those expensive things. I don't think there is anything wrong w/ the vacations though. I mean... the dad must work hard for his money.. of course he is bringing his family on vacation.

Things like that annoy me so much. Forget even what kind of values that teaches a kid, what really pisses me off about it is that by treating your child that way you are essentially robbing her of her chance to BE a child. Kids are less and less kid-like these days, and I think that is so unbelievably sad. They have decades and decades to be adults, but only a very very teeny span of time to be children, and I think it's truly a travesty if we don't do everything we can to allow them to purely be children for as long as they can get away with it.
Take comfort though in the fact that people like that really DON'T exist everywhere... we just happen to live in an area where it's far more common than it is in most other places. And not every wealthy family treats their children that way. I work at a summer program that has many students who are the children of well-off parents, and while we do get the occasional 6 year old with a coach bag and MAC lipstick, most of them are very sweet, normal kids who just happen to live a bit more comfortably than average.

I couldn't have said it better myself!! I like to think it gives people character.
