NWR: your thoughts

I want to know your thoughts about time clocks at work.. u know, punching in?

I personally think its demeaning if theres under 15 employees. My office doesnt do this, but I dont think I would work at a place that did.

I was talking to someone at work about this because he also works at another office and they make him PUNCH IN!! hes a DOCTOR!

we both think its stupid.

Your opinions?

i think it depends your role in the organization

we dont do it - thank goodness!

but i know when the big-wigs from the 'president's floor call our department and no one is here at 9am to answer the phone, when they should be its not good....

i am a salaried employee and its stooopid for me to have to clock in and out. If im ten minutes late in the morning I get reemed a new one, but its ok for me to stay 1 hour later than the 9 hours ive already been there

We don't have one either. Thank goodness!!! Although, many buildings in the city that make you swipe your id card to enter clock your time's in and out. So it's kinda the same thing.

I work in a very large law firm. For the first two years I worked there, as a receptionist, it was part of my job to 'clock' employees in and out in the morning/evening and for lunch. It was terrible. I hated it. We have over 300 employees and it was hard to learn people's names and faces, especially when they didn't WANT me to learn them. And people were SNEAKY! They'd come in on different floors and take the internal staircases if they were late so they could get away with it. I can't even tell you how many times I had employees SCREAMING at me for not changing the time to what they'd WANT it to say.

For that reason and that reason alone, I understand why they now make us clock in. Do I like it? No, but I'll live with it. Then again, my office is HUGE. I understand you being frustrated with it in a small office, though in my old office which was about 20 people we actually had the old school punch cards.

ETA: Right now we have a computer program that we use to 'clock in' and it sucks! It's so slow and half the time it's down so more often than not it clocks me as late, even if I was on time. No one really pays too much mind to it.

Edited again to add: The attorneys here do NOT clock in. That's ridiculous!

I think its demeaning. We are all adults and if people cant be on time their managers should talk with them not punish everyone else.

FH's job has it and if they are even a minute late it rounds up to the next 15 minutes so they lose pay.

i've had two jobs that required me to clock in ... it was very stupid ... at one job, they'd get mad if we go tthere 2 minutes late even if we worked through lunch and stayed till midnight the day before

at this job, there's nothing like that ... it makes no sense for anyone who's paid a salary (not hourly).

it pretty much is a huge demoralizer, IMO ... and totally useless on top of that!

We have a time clock in our shop~there are about 10 employees or so. Sometimes I think it's very dumb for us girls in the office to punch in/out (there's only 2 of us), but that's how it is.

I work at a very small law office. Only 5 full time employees, 2 part time employees & the owner of the business. We do not have to clock in or out but since we are all salaried employees my boss likes to make sure we are in when we are scheduled to be in.
As long as we put in a courtesy call or e-mail if we are running late he is fine with it.

I don't like the idea at all. I've never had to do it and I'm happy about that for sure.

I fill out a time sheet each pay period. I can't use a time clock because there are days I'm working all day but don't step foot into the office once. And usually I'm out in the field at the end of the day, so there'd be no way for me to clock out. Instead I fill out a sheet with my times in and out each day and hand it in at the end of each pay period.

I am a litigation paralegal in the biggest law firm on Long Island. I have to clock in and out. I hate it. It's embarassing and aggrivates the &^%$ out of me.

I'm a nurse and I have to punch in. I actually love it only because I always get to work well before my shift starts so I don't hold up the next shift from going home, but we hardly get that favor returned because people come in right when there shift is suppose to begin, we have to give report to each other before we leave so it could take awhile. Anyway, it's became such an issue so now they are really watching what times people are punching in and it has resolved a lot of issues!
