You can't help but worry, growing up I worried about my dad everyday, you just have to have faith that everything will be ok and that they know what they are doing.......Is he NYPD, Nassau or Suffolk

hahah yea definitley....it a scary thought I must agree, my mom says her thought was that, he is out there doing what he wants to do, so all you can do it trust their judgement...i dunno I know that doesnt help much...lol

Re: NWR:anyone marrying a PO?
hello there! congrats on your FH graduating in december! when they have the graduation @ Madison Square Garden---I can honestly tell you that it's one of the most proud, overwhelming feelings you will have when you see alllll the recruits coming out in their dress uniforms, and knowing that your FH is one of them....well there are just no words.
my brother is on the job for a few years already, and my FH is still a 'rookie'. (he'll be on the streets about 1 yr when yours graduates). here are a few tips i can give you:
--remember that the first year can be the toughest! being a rookie, your FH will have to work the holidays and parades and such, that the old timers don't want to work anymore.
--when you make plans for his nite off--and he calls you and says 'i got notification that i have to work OT', remember that it's not his fault and that there will be many, many times when your plans will change at the last minute. notifications for OT can be a few days in advance or a few hours!
--he will see and experience things on the streets that you and i will never fully understand. when he comes home, be there for him and let him talk about what his day was like....even if the details get a little much for you to take
--don't sweat the small stuff. you'll realize that it's not important to pout and ignore him after a fight, before he goes to work. IMO he should never go to work without you having said 'i love you'. so it often and say it every single day, because his job is dangerous and no matter what happens, you wouldn't want to think that you never got to say it.
--he will make new cop friends, and they will want to go out after work and have a few beers and talk cop shop stuff. try your best not to get upset or jealous! (this happens to a LOT of cop wives/GFs) remember, he has to trust and respect the guys he works with everyday, and to do that, they have to build relationships besides the everday 9-5 like us!
if you have ANY questions, or anything, please feel free to FM me.
good luck!

Awww Megan... don't worry, LI-dub will keep your mind busy while he's working. One of my best friends is a cop (NYPD) and his FW worries all the time.... it's just what you do. Just count down the days until he takes the Suffolk County test. My friend actually just took the test to become a CO, so hopefully he'll be getting out of Brooklyn soon.

Re: NWR:anyone marrying a PO?
Congratulations on your FH graduating the academy!! Thats great!!
I'm marrying a PO too!!
After reading MJDoc12's post to you, there's not much to say! She is so right about everything!
I've been with my FH for 4 years and to be totally honest it takes A LOT of compromise to make it work. The hours are very hard and they see so much stuff out there that we can never really comprehend and not to mention the worrying! I go a little gray everytime I turn the news on!
I don't want to make it sound so horrible (cause then why would I be doing it myself??) but in a relationship with a PO not everyone can really understand what you are going through besides another PO's girlfriend/wife.
Please feel free to FM me if you'd like to chat!

Re: NWR:anyone marrying a PO?
My brother is suffolk county PO he use to work tons of overtime and was always doing extra's because he loved his job. It was so apart of him and we were all proud of him. Over the years it became politics over being a good cop and i have seen a great change in him. He isn't happy anymore and only works overttime every so often. My sister in law was happy to see him around the house more but even now says he is unhappy because as hard as he tries it seems that he only gets punished because he got injured last year during a high speed/foot pursuit and caused the over time to go up in his unit.
I have to say I feel safer as a sister knowing he is on Long Island and not NYC. HE tried to be a city cop - he wanted the glory and brotherhood over the pay. You will see him change over the years and know that you will be his grounding point in life. As you have kids you all will be there for him when he is in despair over things they he might see out there. Even on long island my brother sees things that i can't simply imagine. But also be proud to be apart of a amazing thing. The wives of police offices bond so well and they will be there in your time of need. I am not saying the job is negative just a emotional roller coaster from what I have seen when someone goes from rookie to someone who has years on.
So know you have us on the board to vent to and your family and the wives of follow cops all behind you.
