I have always been told that it's usually due to a lack of Potassium.

Re: NWR....charleyhorses
THere is a pretty common 'old wives tale' that it is caused by a lack of potassium. I have never bothered to look up whether this is scientifically true or not. I do know that when I get them, i eat a potassium-rich food (Like bananas) and they go away pretty quickly.

I also think it is caused by dehydration...I used to get them a lot when I played lacrosse in college.

Re: NWR....charleyhorses
most common cause of muscle cramps is dehydration and loss of potassium. Its very dry now with the heat on so drink more water and have a banana a few times a week. That should help

Re: NWR....charleyhorses
I was told it was a lack of potassium also.
What works for me when I get them (usually in the middle of the night) is as soon as you feel it coming on, sit up and put your foot FLAT on the ground. It helps to keep the muscle stretched so that it can't tense up that much. I'm not going to lie, it still hurts and it will be stiff the next day but it definitely eases the pain during it.
Hope this was helpful

Re: NWR....charleyhorses
I have had really bad charley horses in my legs for the last year and i was getting them more frequently than usual. I decided to go to the doctor and she tested me for all diffrent things, She said it could be from lack of potassium so i increased my intake i now have a glass og oj every morining with lots of potassium...Lots of Bananas and the vitamin water with potassium. And she recommend i start taking a vitamin every day and would u believe i have not had one in the last 3 months since i started doing this...Its a good thing....LOL...because they hurt so bad. HTH

Yep this is exactly what they tell u to do when your pregnant. I get them all the time now! Just sit up and put your foot flat and put pressure on it. It helps!

YUP and stretch those calves for a day or two. Stretch them really good then drink a bottle of water to flush out the lactic acid. HTH
