My doc has given me two chances to lower my cholesterol and I know when he tests me, its going to be the same as it has been all year. Is anyone on cholesterol medication like Lipitor or Vytorin??? I never wanted to be on meds like this but heart disease runs in my family and Im not even 30 yet with these problems. Im a little scared to be on meds like these...

umm ... technically i was told that if you start them u'd have to prolly take them for life. best way to lower cholesterol is to eat healthier like celery ... garlic ... and exercise .. (running and stuff)

thats def not true ....most people take them as a maintance med forever however cholesterol issues can be as much from what you eats as it is something you inherit....we have had alot of patients who are on meds for 6 months to a year get there cholesterol down and HDL up and then slowly go off them and just eat well and they do great ,,,,,,,its when its something you inherit that its more of a problem

Like I said its a big difference between getting it low and changing your eating habits and keeping it low....in that case the meds can jump start it ....if its something she got from her parents its usually a life long thing.....

Re: NWR:Cholesterol Meds
I always assumed high cholesterol came with being overweight but Ive never been overweight although I do eat like sh it. And it doesnt help that FH puts bacon on everything. I feel like I did a lot better the last time. I was broiling and grilling mostly everything. This time I loaded up on garlique and fish oil pills. I dont know how much that would help but I guess Ill find out when I go to the doc in September. So Kellybean, you think I should go for it just to lower my cholesterol and then get off of them?? Or should I keep trying to lower it myself? Someone told me if its inherited its almost impossible to lower on your own. I dont excercise and most of the time eat once a day. That cant be helping
