I did my Master's at Hofstra. It was a Special Ed Masters and the program was designed towards TWO certificates in elementary and special education with a concentration in emotional disturbance. Hofstra will only process ONE of those certificates so you may have to process the other at Nassau BOCES in Westbury.
The special ed program was EXCELLENT. I enjoyed it immensely and my undergrad degree was in a completely unrelated field.

I did my undergrad there and my masters there for teaching English to Speakers of other languages. Feel free to FM me if there is anything I can help you with.

Yeah but they are actually better at it at BOCES. They check with the state to see if you have fulfilled all of your requirements and they let you know where you may be deficient. It isnt hard at all. But then again I finished my masters 10 and a half years ago and have been permanent in both subjects since 98.Things are probably different now.

I think I will actually be applying myself...its all going to be online now....I could kick myself for not being more persistant at Post about a dual masters but the idiot advisor told me 'not to bother'....gee thanks....I probably would have a job by now
Thanks Leslie....I am going to meet with the Dean next week to discuss how many classes I would have to take and to see if anyone of my Post credits will transfer

i did my literacy masters at adelphi...what a waste. i barely learned anything.
i work in a special ed class--just be sure you absolutely want to do special ed if you're going to go through with the masters. i know so many people who refuse to do it because of all the paperwork (IEPs, CSEs, ARs, mods, etc) and it's basically a 'wasted' masters. and since sp ed and literacy are different tenure tracks, you'd have to leave one to do the other.
i would have loved to do a dual cert. it wasn't offered where i went for masters. my sister goes to hofstra and seems to love it. it's supposed to be a very good school for educ. good luck!

Do you think a dual is worth it?? I think it would be beneficial to have both....I would much rather teach reading but I know that I would benefit from learning more about special ed as well

Kathleen, I have been teaching special ed in a psychiatric day treatment center for 10 years. I work with kids who have MULTIPLE disabilities. To answer your question, YES it is beneficial to have both - even if you NEVER teach in a special education class. Having a background in special education will allow you to address the needs of all of your students. You will have more exposure in your program to different methods so if one doesnt work, you can use another. It allows you to modify without the stigma.
I cannot tell you how many of my friends who teach the same age kids as I do, struggle and do not know how (or are not willing) to take the extra step or use alternate methods. I, for one, can teach the same lesson on three different grade levels at once using a multisensory curriculum. The training and experience was able to help you do that.

i went to hofstra for history and secondary education - it was okay, nothing great and nothing bad to say about it - definitely a lot of spoiled students there! My friend was going to Touro for literacy and she absolutely loved it - she was learning a lot - she is switching for unrelated issues but she still speaks highly of it and it is so inexpensive!!
