NYC bridal shops!!! Tips and tricks questions

I want to have a day in the city dress shopping with my mini entourage, however, I know I will probably say yes to the dress when I go. I know what I what and how I want it and I know they have a huge selection. (And all the important people will be with me)

Questions:

Where have you had the best experience?

Does anyone cap their alterations?

What is one thing you wish you knew before you went dress shopping?

TIA
HTH others as well

I went into the city, and had the best experience at Pronovias- It's on 52nd between 5th & Madison- in the middle of alterations now and I'm in LOVE so far. They are doing a fantastic job... alterations cap at $500 there.... If you make an appt. request Sarah she's awesome (you might recognize her from say yes to the dress. she moved from kleinfeld's to pronovias)

also, i don't really have an answer to the last question lol- there were really no surprises for me.. Just a tip though: if you find a dress you like when you're in the city, ask them when their trunk show is for that specific designer and then go back to purchase it.. trunk show discounts are usually about 12.5% off the price of the dress, which ends up basically cutting out the cost of tax on the gown

Bridal Reflections is where I got my dress and I loved them. They cap at 800, I believe. I also liked Kleinsfelds of course, but it was such a zoo. Don't bother with the small salons, they have a very limited selection, unless there is a certain designer that you want to see that only sells there.
I agree about the trunk show. I got a discount because I got my Ysa Makino during the trunk show.
Do your homework and have at least an idea of what you like and what is out there. But don't be so closed minded that you won't consider anything else, you might be surprised.

I only went to Kleinfelds and RK bridal. Great experience at both. RK has TONS of dresses! ETA Kleinfelds alterations are $700 for everything except custom work

I went to Pronovias and the 5th dress I tried - it was it! Then my friend & my sister bought their dresses for their weddings as well! Ask for Jill - she is a sweetheart and helped all 3 of us.
Alterations will start in June and it's $500. Can't wait!
Good luck!

How many have you had so far? I wonder whether I should move first alteration closer to the actual date - I have it right now for June 12th...

my wedding is may 25, and my first fitting was march 8 so you're fine. I just had my 2nd fitting last weekend, so the 1st and 2nd fittings were about a month apart from each other.. my last fitting is on may 3rd, and then I pick up the dress a week or two after that

the first fitting is more simple alterations, like the hem and ripping tulle out if you don't want as much and fixing the neckline.. the 2nd fitting is longer- the hemming is more precisely done and the bustle is done in the 2nd fitting.. the 3rd fitting is similar to the 1st- they said that you basically just try it on and make sure everything you wanted was done and if so, then they start to steam it and get it all ready for you to take home
