I have 7 cats. I find that male cats are much more mellow than female cats. I live on Long Island, with a place for my 7 to run outside. You being in NYC, one cat would be fine. get a scratching post so they don't tear your sofa or carpet. Go to a shelter & adopt a stray. My friend insisted on spending big $$$$ on these pure blood line type cats. All she had was problems. My 7 are all rescued strays, all are healty & playful. If you and your FH work alot, I would get two. They keep each other company when you are not home.

be sure your home is cat proofed before bringing them home. they will play with ANYTHING! cats like to steal all sorts of little things laying around and sometimes eat it so be careful.

i would get a spray bottle so you can train the cat not to be on tables and things...just spray them with water, they hate it and its harmless

I have a male cat and he is awesome!! I found him 2 years ago at a kill shelter on LI. He was not a kitten when I adopted him. I am so happy that I went with a cat that was 3 yrs old, because I think he really appreciated FH and I saving him from a shelter. Kittens always go first it is the full grown guys that get stuck in shelters and they are just as great and loveable as the little guys.

I agree with the spray bottle idea and get yourself self one of those water fountain the filter the water....kitty love it. Hartz also sells a spray that neutralizes the smell of the urine in the little box. I personally don't like the clumping little and stick to the Clay Fresh Step litter and definatly get the litter liner bags. Also enclosed litter box is the way to go.

Good Luck!

i would get 2 also. We have 2 in an apt in Philly and they always play together and run around. Its not much more work having 2 vs 1
