Re: NYC Commuters - Count Your Blessings!
I guess since our train, bus and ferry system is so extensive we won't make the list.
I can't say I prefer getting on the railroad and then through penn station twice a day to sitting in my own car in traffic.

hmmmm yeah but I'd rather sit in traffic and only have a 30 minute commute : ).
They should count up the hours commuted daily. I figured out for me its about 800 hours a year.

heh according to that.. I should move back to San Antonio.. whoohoo..
Nah.. I've driven in 'gridlock' here and it's pretty bad..but I KNOW Houston is horrible!!!!!!!!! Took me 3 hours to get to the airport when if you mapquest it, it says 25mins. We used to joke about that commute.
Mostly I see NY traffic in Long Island is caused by rubbernecking. Nothing really major as far as clogs. The bridges and tunnels are expected to bottleneck, but don't ask me to understand the lag on the Cross-Bronx Expressway. Over all a lot of NYC folks commute. Most have never owned a car (SHOCK). Long Island is a whole 'nother story. Still traffic is bearable here.
this is time stuck it traffic...not time on LIRR, bus, subway, etc...
I bet that would put NYC up there on coomute times

Re: NYC Commuters - Count Your Blessings!
I LOVE the LIRR for commuting.. I sleep to work and/or read and read the newspaper on the way home. I carry a bag with my hat and rough pillow.
What I could do without is the cellphone abuse. (I won't start). I do miss the privacy of driving myself. But I don't miss the traffic, the heat, the cold, the waiting, the aggreviation or the prices in oil, gas and that ever fun flat tire.
My commute to Penn is 45mins and to work is an extra 10-15. I leave my house at 7:05 (train leaves at 7:14) and im at my desk by 8:35. Going home is a different story. I try to be downstairs by 6:30 before they lock the doors to the street I need, i usually catch the 7:05 so I'm home by 8pm. So each day is almost 2 and a half hours in commute. Thank god I like to read!

Erica - this seemed like a no-brainer to me, but THAT'S the whole point! NY'ers don't HAVE to sit in traffic b/c we have such a superior (ok, relative term here people) rail system available to commuters...Cities like Denver and such don't have such an infrastructure in place. Of course there are plenty of people that do drive into the city everyday, but they are not sitting in there cars for as long as some other cities.

I have done both the drive commute and the train commute and I like the train better! HOwever I commute from the Bronx to NYC and I have to say going through Metro NOrth is wayyy better than going through Penn Station. I think Penn is much more crowded. And that whole area too - Times Sq/garment district is very hard to get through walking - I get too aggravated!

Commuting from greater Nassau via train is probably a good experience. Commuting from Ronkonkoma $ucks, $ucks, $ucks...No article could ever make me think otherwise...and again....man who eats greasy, smelly food next to you on the train is the WORST.....
