NYC Engagement Party Ideas?

I wanted to have a small engagement party in NYC for our friends. Our families are not hosting an engagement party but rather a meet the family kind of thing at someones house. I still wanted to celebrate someway with our friends without spending a lot of money. I was thinking of renting out a room in a bar or something. Anyone have any ideas or places they can suggest?? Also....is this something people bring gifts to?? If so then how do I get that across to them. I'd hate for some people to show up with gifts and others not, I think people would feel bad.

well i wanted the same thing and called dozens and dozens of places in the city when planning this. Problem is that many bars and lounges wont close off a section UNLESS you pay for them to close it off which is extra and alot extra. Some were even close to $200 per person and then extra charges. They dont want to lose the business they have on a friday or saturday night, this was also the problem with many restaurants too in the city for a weekend night. If you do sunday its ALOT more flexible OR if you do it earlier on a saturday for example. They told me if we were out by 10-10:30 it would be fine since many bars get busy around 11pm and later. But every place is different and there are some places where you can get a private room and a few were about $130 pp and then also open bar tab.

There is a bar in the city called manahatta, and you can get your own section but not private and you can do an open bar tab but do it for as much as you want, lets say you want just $500 you'll pay for and then after that guests pay for their own drinks

Another option is to go to a place such as 230 5th for example and get a few tables there and have your own section, my friend called to throw a party there and they wanted a minimum of around 50 ppl and to buy at least 7 bottles and bottles are $300 each.

This is definitely more of what i wanted for my e-party, i even called up places in the city that were lofts, art museums, dance studios and many more. But after realizing it would cost more than double than what a catering hall would cost I just gave up after 2 months of searching non-stop and calling tons of places and fh said just go with the catering hall and i said fine and just did that.
