I just got hired recently w/ the BOE! I'm really excited! This was such an answer to prayer! My principal says I need a file #. I went into the 65 court St. place & the Queens ISC to file my paperwork 2 weeks ago. I called today to ask about whether they have a file # ready, the lady said no and that I will supposedly receive it w/ my 1st paycheck. I'm really confused! I thought you need your file # in order to be on payroll? How does this work?

i got hired in NOV and started like 5 days later i filled out everything there at work. I didnt get paid right away (prob for over a month) but i didnt have a problem, it wasnt really a big deal

I received mine on my first check as well. It is hard for principals to keep up with every change the BOE makes .... I remember them asking for my file number too but I wasn't able to give it to them until the first check as well. No worries. It will be fine.
Where are you working by the way? I love work for the city schools ... the kids bring such joy to my life. Even when they drive me crazy. CONGRATS! You will transform the lives of so many children! ITS THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD!

I had the same problem when I started. I kept asking for a file number and even when I brought my commitment letter to the Regional office, they wouldn't tell me what it was.
So all that happened basically is that once you're put on payroll at the school (which will probably be right away), you'll be given a file number which the payroll secretary at your school will have. So the first week of school make sure you visit the payroll secretary and ask her what your file number is, she'll check on the computer and give it to you.

First - your payroll secretary will have your file number. It is no big deal if YOU don't get it right away, the people who need your #, have it. Most schools don't require you to have BOE ID and many schools (including mine) will make them for you on site. They are def needed if you go to other schools for workshops as they will allow you to breeze through security. They also come in handy for teacher discounts, but your UFT prescription card could do that also.

When I worked for the DOE we were told to tell the newly hired teachers that we don't go by the file number anymore even though you have one, but you don't need it....it will be on your paycheck though...

I was hired last year. File numbers are barely used! You will get one on your pay check the 15th. Until then, you should use your social.

yeah some schools must not even do photo ID because i have yet to take a picture!
