NYC Tipping - Doormen and Security?

NYC Tipping - Doormen and Security?

This is our first Christmas living in a doorman building. Any idea how much to tip? We have about 10 doormen (3 shifts) plus the super, plus the guys who run the security door at the service entrance, etc. I'm not sure if the number of people affects how much to give (I hope it does!). Thanks

we have four doorman that i see regularly - i give them $20 each - i live in a huge building - so i think they do fine

i don't tip the security people - i have no clue who they are

they never tell us the supervisors name on the list of door people so i don't worry about it

A friend of mine was telling me that managment actually gives him a list every year that tells them how much they should tip everyone.
Anyway, I think I remember him saying $50 for the doormen.

Last year, I think we spent somewhere around $400 spread across the many people who work in our big building. I need to look for the breakdown by position and will get back to you with that.

We have about five doormen and two of them suck, so only three are getting tips - we're giving them $50 each.

$50 for the ones you interact with and like is fine. If you get a lot of packages and/or deliveries and they handle them well then you can tip a bit more. My old doormen used to (and probably still do) rake in the cash at the holidays. I used to live on Fifth Avenue near Grammercy and those guys make in tips alone.

does anyone have escorts & porters? If so, what do you tip them?

We have 27 ppl on the list we got and it's coming out to be like $1000 to tip all of them! HELP!

When I lived in the city I had a huge list of people to tip. My general guideline was about $35 each. Some more and some less. It was a few years ago, though.

Building Super,Handyman & Doormen all $50.
Porters-I think there are like 8-9 of them..$20 each. In our building, our engineering crew are all BIGMOUTHS..they love to gossip about all the tenants so you better tip,or everyone will know that you didn't..plus its reflected in their work- I find that if they are 'taken care of' they will come running when you have a problem, next door neighbor (millionare BTW) does NOT tip..whenever he has a problem, they tell him to call the management office to make an appointment.

when we lived in an apartment we tiped the same. It was also VERY helpful because we were subletting from DHs brother so when we left we did not have to pay a move out fee. That fee would have been $500. My BIL moved back in and kept the furniture. We just moved out clothing and some wedding presents like dishes and a vaccuum.

A lot of you are suggesting in the $50 range for the doormen, but for me, that would be over $500 since I have 10 doorman in the building plus the super plus the service staff. Is it normal to spend that much on building staff? It just seems like a lot to me but then I don't want to insult them by giving them a small amount (though I live in a really large building).

i just put my cards together - i live in a building with 36 floors - 10-12 units per floor -

I have 5 doormen to take care according to my sheet
we don't have to worry about maintenance ti seems

So 3 i couldn't put a face to a name so they aren't doing much for me - i gave $20, 2 get taxis for me and handle my packages i gave $40 -

i asked around in my building this is typical - i live in Boston though

Thanks!! I think I have to give all the doormen the same. With my crazy work hours, I actually manage to see the 8-4, 4-12, and 12-8 shifts pretty regularly! Since the ATM doesn't give out $10s I think I'm probably going to go with $40 each for the doormen as well - thanks again!!
