NYLISA - THEY CAUGHT THE SCUM
FRANKLIN SQUARE, N.Y. -- A man who posed as a police officer and shot a Long Island bank manager to death in a street confrontation last month was arrested Thursday, authorities said.
Reginald Gousse
James Gottlieb
Reginald Gousse, who has been linked to police impersonation robberies in Brooklyn and Queens, was arrested at 10:20 a.m. after trying to flee from law enforcers by ramming their cars with his 2001 Mercedes-Benz, Nassau County police said in a release.
Gousse, 31, of Queens, faced a charge of second-degree murder and was to be arraigned Friday, police said.
Gousse was being held by police Thursday night and was unavailable for comment. There was no telephone number listed for him in Queens.
HSBC manager James Gottlieb, 49, was driving home on Semton Boulevard in Franklin Square at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 5 when a black SUV with flashing lights pulled him over. When he got out of his car, he was confronted by a man who claimed to be a police officer and ordered him to get on the ground, Nassau Detective Sgt. Dennis Barry said.
Gottlieb demanded to see the man's identification, and the two began to argue.
Gottlieb started walking toward the front door of a nearby house, and the man posing as a police officer fired three shots, striking Gottlieb in the arm and leg, police said.
Gottlieb, of Garden City South, N.Y., died at a hospital an hour later. The gunman fled the scene.
Nassau County police said the New York Police Department's impersonation division helped them track down Gousse.
Gousse was released from prison last March after being arrested in 1998 for committing an armed robbery while impersonating a policeman, the Nassau County Police Department said.
I am so happy that they got him. Now your husband and his family can have justice for this horrific crime! You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
