Objections at weddings....

Objections at weddings....

So...we're using my FH's family's priest (Episcopalian) to perform our ceremony. We were obligated to participate in pre-marital counseling sessions...which is cool...but at the end of our last session we're informed that for the 3 consecutive Sundays before the ceremony, we have to attend service at the church (neither of us attend church regularly) so that he can ask the congregation if anyone knows any reasons why we shouldn't get married.

Has anyone else heard of this or had to do this? I think it's completely weird and uncomfortable. Both sides of FH's family attend that church and many of them I haven't met yet because FH really doesn't interact with them too much. FSIL said it's ok and not to worry, everyone had to do it. And I'm not worried about anyone actually objecting (and God help their soul if they ever did lol) but it's just weird to me and I don't wanna do it. Plus he said that he has to ask at the ceremony. This was something I was planning on omitting from the program because I think it's dumb. When I asked he said he 'has' to, so I'm assuming it's a rule of the church etc...

Ugh...it may sound silly but I'm going to be so anxious about standing up in front of a congregation I don't know with that question being posed to them. Awkward!!!

I am Episcopilian and I have NEVER heard of this in my life. I have been to church every week as a child into teenage years

It sounds kind of kooky to me..I do not think it is a church thing maybe just that pastor

Crap! And it took us forever to decide on someone...plus he's bilingual english/creole which is PERFECT. OK, I need to figure out how to convince him not to do this...or I'm gonna have to suck it up. It just makes me feel a bit uncomfortable

My FSIL said that her cousins had to stand the first time the announcement was made but stayed seated the other 2 times. Yeah...what's he gonna do...NOT marry us???

Re: Objections at weddings....

that sounds totally awkward
catholics do the banns of marriage, which they post in the weekly bulletin for like 4 weeks in a row that john and jane want to get married. that way, if john is still married to sally, sally can object. make sense? maybe ask him WHY they do it and has anyone ever objected, and for what reasons?
my church was mainly concerned that we werent already married.

I'm not religious so I'm not sure if he HAS to but it sounds crazy to me.
