4.13.08 A Pleasant Experience at the Dentist
Share

I've been looking for a decent dentist *forever*!!!! When I found out that Adrian just opened up his new practice, I was very skeptical at first about going in and trying his skills... no offense Adrian... =P But John's tooth was in an emergency state~ and I needed a good teeth cleaning.... so we scheduled an appointment with Adrian on a Sunday afternoon. hmmm....

I did not want to go to see a dentist. In fact, I was dreading it... why? because my last dentist told me that I had 6-10 cavities and that I needed to have them filled, which after printing out the bill for me, came out to be a total of about >$1000. Absolutely NO JOKE~ This doctor's name is Dr. Oleg Vinson in Forest Hills. And I will *never* go back to his practice again!

So with this experience in my back belt, I sat in Adrian's patient chair in deadly anticipation of what the xray report determined. Adrian was very professional and at times gave me the whole dentist attitude of telling me how I needed to really clean behind my wisdom teeth etc while cleaning my teeth... He reviewed the xrays at the same time with me on a flat panel monitor next to the patient chair. He showed me where I had previous fillings done and how my real problem was only on one tooth. What happened to the 6-10 cavities that needed to be immediately taken care of? omygosh!

I do remember the large anesthesia (Novocaine) needle though... and I really dreaded that.... so I consulted John, squeezed John's hand really tight as Adrian numbed my gums with the needle... the needle itself is thin but the contraption that held the needle is mad huge! They really should invent a smaller contraption so that it won't freak out the patient =P

In any case, Adrian did a pretty good job of not sticking my gums and killing it. My last last dentist just stabbed my gums which I think hit a bone or something. My gums were totally bruised for a week afterwards. After Adrian's numbing, my gums didn't hurt at all! But I think John's hand might have... And I think Adrian was more scared of my frightened expression than I was of his needle... ahhaha so he said!

So after the numbing, Adrian went ahead and started drilling around the nerve in my teeth to dig out the old filling and clean out the cavity around the old filling. Adrian was very persistent in thoroughly cleaning out the cavity. He also asked me to raise my hand if I felt any pain at all and would timely ask whether I was alright, giving me a choice of whether I wanted to proceed or not. (Well, I suppose after drilling a huge well in my teeth, I think the only way to go would be to get the cavity done or else I'd be walking around with a huge hole in my tooth... lol~~~) but I appreciated the candid awareness of the patient's feelings =)

Pics were taken of the before, during and after of the procedure (click on link below). Suffice to say that after the drilling, the rest was smooth sailing. Adrian went ahead to fill the well he had drilled. He filed it down patiently and then that was it! A few hours after the numbness wore off, my teeth and gums did not hurt and my teeth look just as good as new!

In all, my experience this time was quite pleasant and educational. Educational because at every step of the way Adrian would tell me why he was doing something that he was doing. I greatly appreciate that. And I know he's not out to charge me an arm and a leg =) If anyone is looking for a good dentist, I highly recommend checking Adrian's practice out!
