FH is turning 30 in a month and we are getting married 2 months after, money is tight to say the least. I want to do something special for him, but I don't know what! I was thinking about have a small bbq and not telling him I invited his friends and just have them arrive. Then I was thinking about taking him out to an early dinner and when we come back a few of his close friends and family are here waiting. I don't know! Whenever I ask him what he wants to do he says he doesn't know! Anyone have any good ideas????

I think the after dinner surprise is a great idea! He won't be expecting it, and you can use the excuse of having the wedding right around the corner for why you aren't planning anything extra. Also, you won't have to worry too much about feeding everyone if it's an after dinner event. You can pick up some simply snacks (making your own veggie/fruit/cheese platters is always cheaper than buying a pre-assembled ones) and a few bottles of wine and throw a great party!
Sangria is always my go-to drink for things like this too, because it's easy to make and almost everyone likes it. And, you can make it on the spot if you use canned fruits. Not ideal, but still tasty. I like to do white wine (I use moscato because it's super sweet), brandy, ginger ale (or sprite for sweetness again), and canned pineapples. Can also toss in a can of peaches. :)

A little surprise get together with close friends and family sounds great. And I'm sure after dinner and with the wedding right around the corner he will not expect a thing.

After dinner sounds great. He won't be expecting it and will probably understand why you aren't planning anything big. Go for it, he'll be surprised!

My sister's husband turned 30 last year and she had a surprise BBQ party with his friend's and family at his aunt's house. It was a fun time and he enjoyed it.
