We actually wanted to do a 'wedding-y wedding'.... which as it turns out is kind of different in and of itself! So many people refuse to have group dances (electric slide, etc..) and don't want the bouquet and garter toss... we wanted it all!!!
But I think we also had a few fairly unique things...
*My sons walked me down the aisle and 'gave me away'.
*During the ceremony we did a hand prayer with our 2 boys - and then had everyone who was in attendance join hands as well... if you are interested in the wording I will post it at the bottom.
*We had a friend sing and play guitar during the ceremony - 'Harvest Moon' for the prelude, 'Times Like These' for the BP and family procession and 'She's Got A Way' for my entrance.
*We got introduced to the reception to the song 'Nookie' by Limp Bizkit
*I wore gold shoes with crystals on them during the ceremony and pink converse during the ceremony
*We didn't want to be introduced and suddenly be dancing in front of everyone - so for our first dance we had EVERYONE dance with us in the beginning. Then the DJ asked the guests to leave the floor to the bridal party only. Then he asked the bridal party to leave the floor so that only Rob and I were dancing during the last moments of the song.
*My father and mother are both deceased. I intended to dance with my dad's best friend during the 'father/daughter' dance... but he had a heart attack the day of. So I danced with my best friend's father - I have known him my entire life and he was close with my parents as well. We danced to my parents wedding song (Always by Patsy Cline) and while we danced there was a montage of my parents and my sister (who also passed away) and some shots of aunts, uncles and other relatives who could not be there playing on the plasma screens behind us.
*After my 'parent' dance, we invited people to come up with their parents or children to dance to the song 'In My Life' while another montage of close friends and family played on the screens.
*We rented a huge party bus to cart our guests from my best friends house to the reception and back there for an after party that was INCREDIBLE. There was a stripper pole on the bus and my MOH and her husband both did pole dances.. I didn't plan that.
*My guests did a human pyramid at the reception in our honor... that was not at all planned by us either!
*We had a steel drum band on the terrace during cocktail hour.
*We had Giant Swirlypop Lollipop centerpieces on the kid's tables.
Of course we didn't have anything UNIQUE.. all of this stuff has been done before... but they were all a little out of the norm and it made for a FABULOUS day altogether.
***Our Hands Prayer***
(Rob, Our sons and I hold hands)
These are the hands of your family,
strong and vibrant with love that are holding yours on
your wedding day.
These are the hands that will work along side yours,
as together you all build your future, as you laugh and
cry, as you share your innermost secrets and dreams.
Boys, these are the hands of your mother and father
These are the hands that will comfort you in illness
and wipe tears of sorrow and joy from your eyes.
These are the hands that will tenderly lift your chin
to look into each your eyes and are filled completely with
their overwhelming love for you
(Here is where she asked the 'audience' to hold the hands of the people next to them - I wrote this part)
Friends, witness how the love that we have connects each of us as tangibly as your hands are connecting you at this very moment.
If you allow your hands to support this family
When they struggle and congratulate them when they achieve their dreams
Then that love will always return to you.
