We are using a 'rent-a-rabbi' to marry us and our reception and ceremony are in the same place. We've met with our rabbi a few times in the months leading up to our wedding, but we didnt know him before. Is it customary to invite him to the wedding?

It is not necessary for you to invite your officiant be it a Rabbi, priest, judge, etc. If you & FH are close to the person then I'd say yes.

Yeah I think he's a pretty good guy and we really like him. I guess I don't want him to feel obligated to get us a gift...i mean we are paying him to be there

We were in the same situation, a rabbi and a priest. I was told it's 'proper etiquette' to send them formal invitations. We did and they both respectfully declined...though the priest did stay for the CH for a little while.
That said, I don't think they'd be insulted in the least if you didn't invite them, I don't think mine would have been insulted if we hadn't. Do what you feel is best. I'm pretty sure that since they don't know you or your guests, they will decline.

that's what i figured. If i decide to just invite him to the CH how do I go about doing that...just ask him?

if they want to stick around they will and they'll know that it's understood that they're more than welcome too. If you want to casually say after the ceremony ends that 'we hope you'll stick around for awhile at the CH' I guess that would be ok...but I wouldn't mention anything beforehand, not in the words that you're 'inviting' them to stay....they know they can stay if they want.
